To describe a particular person, place, or thing.
As a feature, description is a style of writing which
can be useful for other variety of purposes, such as:
1. To engage a reader’s attention;
2. To create characters;
3. To set a mood or create an atmosphere.
• Identification
Identifies phenomenon to be described.
• Description
Describes parts, qualities, characteristics.
• Focus on specific participant.
• Use Attributive and Identifying Processes.
• Frequent of Epithets and Classifiers in
nominal groups.
• Use Simple Present Tense.
1. To show rather than tell the reader what
something/someone is like.
2. Use carefully chosen adjectives and adverbs.
3. Sensory description: what is heard, seen,
smelt, felt, tasted.
4. Precise use of adjectives, similes, metaphors
to create images/pictures in the mind.
5. Strong development of the experience that
“put the reader there” focuses on key details,
powerful verbs and precise nouns.

Describing Person
• Face Shape : Oval, round, heart-shaped.
• Skin/Face : Rosy pink-cheeked; wrinkled, pale, silky,
rough, callused, dry.
• Eyes : Color; eye expressions (sad, tear-filled,
twinkling); eye shape & size (large, round,
almond-shaped, slanted).
• Mouth/Lips : Thin, full, or pursed lips; laugh, smile, grin.
• Hair : Texture/appearance, volume of hair,
colors.
• Clothes : Blazer, t-shirt, skirt, trouser, etc.
• Activities : Working, walking, speaking, etc.

Growing your own food not only help you to
significantly reduce carbon footprint and save
quite a bit of money each year but can also be
great fun. Equally, especially if you’re starting
out with an allotment or decent-sized vegetable
garden, you’ll probably be needing a surprising
number of seeds to offer as much variety in
your diet and year-round food as possible.
