Unit Description

This Art unit is designed to allow you to explore colour mixing and understand primary and
secondary colours as well as warm and cool colours. You will also use ideas from our previous
‘Line Art’ unit to incorporate techniques from the Australian Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander
Art Culture.

The tasks in this booklet will be used to monitor your progress throughout, with the final
assessment tasks completed individually and collected for marking.

By the end of this booklet, you will be able to:

• Identify primary colours.
• Identify secondary colours are understand these are created by mixing primary colours.
• Analyse and discuss colours in photos as primary/secondary and warm/cool.
• Draw settings of individual choice and reflect on each with regard to chosen colours, mood
and tone.
• Acknowledge and include Australian Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Art techniques into
drawings.
• Be able to actively reflect on booklet completion.
Task 1 - The Colour Wheel
• Activity 1.1 – We begin with dissecting and labeling the Colour Wheel. Using
poster paint, we will put down the 3 primary colours in the center, mix these to
create our secondary colours and further mix primary and secondary to create our
tertiary colours.
Task 1 - The Colour Wheel
• Activity 1.2 (Separate handout) – Using the legend, label inside each
colour section to show weather the colour is primary, secondary or
tertiary.

Legend:
P = Primary
S = Secondary
T = Tertiary
Task 1 - The Colour Wheel
• Activity 1.3 (Separate handout) – The Colour Wheel can also be divided
into cool and warm colours. Which half do you prefer? Discuss with an
elbow partner.
Task 2 – Describing photos and drawings
• Activity 2.1 – Living here on beautiful Sunshine Coast, we are able to experience
such a variety of gorgeous environment landscapes that we sometimes take for
granted. We will now look in detail at these photos and take note at the range of
colours used, the mood and feeling it creates for us, weather or not it is a cool or
warm colour.

Task 3 – Local Animal Indigenous Art Jigsaw
• Activity 3.1 – Included in our local environment landscape would be a variety of our Australian animals.
Within the Sunshine Coast we find Kangaroos, Cockatoos, Dolphins and Koalas.
• In groups of 6, select one of these four local animal templates (provided by teacher on A3 paper). Your
group will begin by dividing and cutting the animal into 6 sections. Using the line art technique (series of
lines, dots and shapes reflecting the Australian Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Art Culture taught in a
previous unit), you choose one primary or secondary colour to decorate your selected section in felt pen
(group decides on allocated colour per group member). At the conclusion, you will then as a group, glue
each detailed section back together onto a black A3 paper background.
