What is ‘Global Warming’ ?
 An ongoing increase in the entire temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally based on the
greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs and other pollutants.
Global warming is the observed and projected increases in the average temperature of Earth's
atmosphere and oceans.
The Earth's average temperature rose about 0.6° Celsius (1.1° Fahrenheit) in the 20th century, see
temperature graphs below
What causes it?
 It occurs when carbondioxide, air pollutants and
greenhouse gases trapped in the atmosphere. These gases
absorb sunlight and solar radiation. Ordinarily they have to
bounce back to space but because of these pollutants they
stay in and make the Earth hotter.
What are the results?
 Melting glaciers
 Disruption of habitats
Diseases
Plants and animals
Many species of plants and animals are already moving their
range northward or to higher altitudes as a result of warming
temperatures.
What are the results?
 Increase in average temperature
 Rising sea levels
 Climate change
Precipitation (rain and snowfall) has increased across the
globe, on average.
What should we do to
stop it?
 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400
pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning
Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and
higher in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon
dioxide each year.
 Speak up!
The most important thing is to inform other people about
global warming.
What should we do to stop
it?
Buy better bulbs

LED lightbulbs use up to 80 percent less energy than

conventional incandescents.

Rethink planes, trains, and automobiles.

Choosing to live in walkable smart-growth cities and towns with quality

public transportation leads to less driving, less money spent on fuel, and
less pollution in the air.

Weatherize

heating and air-conditioning account for almost half of home energy use.
What will happen if we can’t
stop
global warming
1. If all the ice caps melt then the oceans will rise 230ft.
2. Species will go extinct and will disrupt their food chain,
or species will migrate also disrupting the food chain.
3. Most of the crops will not be able to survive the
changing temperatures and their will be a food shortage.
What will happen if we can’t
stop
global warming
1. Cities such as Venice and small villages in Ghana are
starting to sink.
2. Global warming will increase the temperature of oceans
and that will increase the chances of hurricanes.
3. Scientists are worried about the "tipping point".
Tipping point is the point where positive feedback loops
back and counteracts to accelerate global warming.
