INtro
● This project will demonstrate the effect sleep has on a student’s GPA. If a student
gets more hours of sleep, then their GPA will be higher than those who get less
hours. We predict a strong, positive correlation of 0.825. To gather data we will
conduct a sample survey of the DAHS student population.
Data set
● Population- is an entire group of ● Our population consists of DAHS students.
individuals.

● Sample- is part of the population, from ● Our sample consists of 25 students of

which we collect data. varying grades in DAHS.

● Variable- is any characteristic of an ● Our projects explanatory variable is hours

individual.. There are two types: of sleep and the responsive variable is
explanatory and responsive. student GPA.
Data table

Our explanatory variable is identified as hours of sleep, because we predict that sleep will affect GPA.
Graph

● An outlier is an individual observation that falls outside the overall pattern of the
graph. Our scatterplot does not contain any outliers.
Interpret r & r2

● Correlation -describes the direction and strength of a straight-line relationship

between two quantitative variables (r).
● The correlation value as seen on our scatterplot is -0.055. If r= -0.055 the correlation
is negative meaning as hours of sleep increase the student's GPA decreases from our
results. The correlation of -0.055 means the correlation is weak and not valid.

● Coefficient of Determination (r2)- is the fraction of the variation in the values of y

that is explained by the least squares regression of y on x.
● Our Coefficient of Determination value is 0.003. Our scatterplot has a .3% variation.
Prediction
● Least-squares regression line- is a line that makes the sum of the squares of the
vertical distance as small as possible. To calculate the regression line we use
y= -0.009x+3.754.
Slope Intercept form: Y=mx+b
y=-0.009(8) +3.754
y=0.072+3.754
y=3.826
● If a student gets 8 hours of sleep then I predict that they will have a 3.826 GPA with
a .3% variation. Our prediction is not valid due to the .3% variation.
Lurking Variables
● Lurking Variable -is a variable that has an important effect on the relationship among the
variables in a study but is not one of the explanatory variables studied.

● A Lurking Variable that affects our data results is weather. As weather grows colder students
tend to sleep and study more because they are inside more often.

● Another Lurking Variable depends on a student’s extracurricular activities, if a student

participates in after school activities they have less time to study and sleep.

● Both of these variables are common response because it affects both the explanatory and
responsive variables.
Conclusion
● If a student gets more hours of sleep, then their GPA will be higher than those who
get less hours. We predict a strong, positive correlation of 0.825.

● This hypothesis concludes to be incorrect due to

the weak, negative correlation of
-0.055 in our sample survey results.
