Toronto gets its water from lake Ontario. Toronto's
water is freshwater, because it gets water from lake Ontario and lake Ontario's water is fresh water. Lake Ontario has much more water than we need. WHAT STEPS DOES TORONTO TAKE TO PROCESS WATER ?
There are 5 steps to process water:
• Screening- water from lake or rivers or the ground passes through a screen as it enters the water treatment plant. When the water source is lake or river, the screen serves an important function . • Coagulation- treatment plant workers add alum and other chemicals to the water which cause tiny sticky particles, or floc to form. • Sedimentation- the water and floc flow into a sedimentation basin. As the water sits there, the heavy floc settle to the bottom. • Filtration- waters passes through layers of gravel, sand and perhaps charcoal, serve to filter out, any remaining particles. • Disinfection- water goes into a closed tank or reservoir chlorine or other disinfecting chemicals kill any microorganisms or bacteria in the water and keep help the water clean until distribution.. WHAT STEPS DOES TORONTO TAKE TO TEST WATER?
• Toronto's tap water is continuously tested to ensure it meets the
strict standard of Toronto public health, the province of Ontario and the Government of Canada • Drinking water of Toronto city is tested every six hours (over 6,000 times a year) • Conducts more than 20,000 tests at the water treatment plants annually. • Conducts 15,000 bacteriological tests on samples collected from the water distribution system annually. The city of Vaughan water services department is responsible for the uninterrupted supply and distribution of safe potable drinking water to all residential, industrial, commercial and institutional customers. HOW DOES TORONTO STORE WATER? Toronto city stores water in three formats: • Floating reservoir: newer water tower or older Water tank with limited capacity. • Ground level reservoir: underground water storage with grass covered top with large capacity. • Temporary storage: stored at a water treatment plant with limited capacity.
