THE CALLEJÓN OF HUAYLAS

The Callejon of Huaylas is located in Huaraz, Ancash department, 400 kms.

The north of Lima, capital of Peru, it is an impressive group of beautiful

ladscapes a colorful valley made up of the white cordillera and the black

Cordillera between which goes the powerful rivers, Santa river, watering the

fields of the owns which lie along its banks.

This land of high peaks is a favorite among climbers from all over the world, in

the Callejon of Huaylas (Huaraz, Ancash) there are 35 peaks that are more

than 6000 mts. high, among them there is Huascarán - which with its 6,768

mts. is the highest snow covered peak in Peru, and the second in America

after Aconcagua, and Alpamayo (6,120 mts), Known as the most beautiful

snow covered mountain in the world.


Huascarán and Alpamayo, form part of the highest tropical mountain range in the

planet, known as the white Cordillera not only for their everlasting snow capped peaks

but for the chemical make up of the rocks of quartz and felspar.

IN THE CALLEJÓN
Touring the Callejon of Huaylas is an unforgetable experience which begins in the
city of.

RECUAY.- It is the first tour of the valley, it preserves its colonial style of age old
houses mingled with simple buildings a mud-brick walles and tiled roofs. situated at
3432 mts . it boasts the mineral of CONOCOCHA, UCUSCHACA, PACHACOTO,
Pumapampa, Burgos and Utucu, as well as QUEROCOCHA AND CONOCOCHA
lakes.
HUARAZ:
Which is 3,052 meters over sea level It´s one of the most important regions of Peru
because of its exquisite natural beauty as well as the greatness of its archeology and
its folkloric traditions.
In Huaraz city you can hire the service of travel Agencies that after different
programmes to visitthe callejon de Huaylas . The majority of a agencies can be found
in Avenida Luzuriaga and the most economical Price of a tour is around 30 soles
approximately 18 dollars and it consists of a quick visit to the towns Recuay ,
Caraz,Yungay and Llanganue lake.

CARHUAZ:
its name is derived from, cea huash (yellow), name given to the area due to the colour
of the flowers of the heather (retama) which covers the rearby montains. Situated at
2,688 mts, it keeps its Hispanic and Colonial atmosphere 8 kms to the south, you can
find the town of Marcará, where begins a 4 - kilometers road that reaches to the
medicinal and mineral water spas of Chancos, also called "The Fountan of Youth".
YUNGAY: a big monument of Jesus with his arms opened is the symbols of the
town which was destroyed by the earthquake in 1970. Even now you can see some
vestiges of this tragedy.

CARAZ: Is beautiful city and is big its name tradition is mildnees Caraz its food
delicious for me.

RESTAURANTS
The typical gastronomy offers a big number of plates prepared with guinea pig, poultry,
pork and lambs. Sweets and small breads are prepared in the area as well.
The soups are very popular in the area, we can try the very popular picante de cuy
served with boiled patatoes or the "jaca cashqui", prepared also with guinea pig and
the "pecan-caldo" prepared with lamb head. But you also can find chinese and italian
restaurants in Huaraz.

ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES


It will take you 6 hours by air and 8 hours by bus to get to Huaraz (the capital of the
department of Ancash) from Lima the only way to get there is by bus or car, 408 kms
is the distance between the two cities.
You have to take the freeway Panamericana Norte (Leaving Lima towards the north)
until you get to Pativilca (km. 202 from Lima) from there you must turn to the route that
takes you to Huaraz. The bus fare is about 5 and 18 dollars.
CALLEJON OF HUAYLAS
You start to laugh, to rub your eyes to make sure you're not
seeing a fantastic mirage. Seconds pass, perhaps minutes...but
that's not important here, in this valley where the boundaries of
time disappear.
The breeze strokes your face, rumples your hair and you realize
that that progression of rugged scenes framed by the gigantic
grandeur of the snow peaks, the flower-decked fields and blue
lakes, are not imaginings but something real, because you are in
a place that is dream-like. You are in the Callejón de Huaylas.
Located in the Department of Ancash - a wonderful land where
all the varieties of scenery of the planet can be enjoyed - the
Callejón de Huaylas is a warm valley stretching between the
Black and the White Cordilleras, watered by the winding Santa
river that rises in Lake Conococha at over 13,000 feet above sea
level.
