Hazardous Materials Awareness

Level 1
Hazardous Materials Awareness

 All persons handling, transporting and/or using hazardous materials are responsible
for conducting work in a safe manner through:

– Recognizing hazardous materials

– Utilizing the Hazard Communication Information at the worksite

– Following appropriate controls when working with hazardous materials

What are Hazardous Materials?

A substance or material that can pose an unreasonable risk to health, safety,

and the environment, for example:
 Chemicals  Wastes
– Oxidizers, corrosives, flammables, etc.
 Tobacco, drugs, and alcoholic
 Radioactive materials* beverages
 Explosives*

Almost anything used inappropriately can become hazardous.

3 *Refer to Radiation Level 1 & Explosives Level 1 Training in QUEST

Environmental Hazards
 Substances that may be hazardous to
the aquatic environment – acute and
chronic toxicity.

What Causes a Material to be Hazardous?
Health Hazards

Toxicity Exposure
 How poisonous a material is.  How much of the material is in contact
with the person.

Routes of entry:
 Injection (least common)
 Ingestion (easily avoidable)
 Skin absorption (frequent)
Inhalation (most common)

 Hazardous materials can be and are used safely everyday with the appropriate
precautions.

Evaluation of Hazardous Materials – Hazard vs Risk

Assessment of Hazard Assessment of Risk

 Consider form of the material  Identify adverse effects
 Consider exposure limits  Define and quantify exposure
 Relate the exposure to the effect

Control the Risk

 Utilize elimination, substitution, administrative
control, and engineering control techniques
7

 Utilize Personnel Protective Equipment
Hazard Communication Information

 Utilization of the Hazard Communication Information at the worksite by personnel is

necessary.
– Provides personnel with information about the materials being used.
– With this, personnel can take the necessary steps to reduce exposure, substitute for less
hazardous materials, and establish correct work practices.
– This, in turn, will help prevent the occurrence of work-related illnesses and injuries caused by
these materials.

– The personnel in charge of a location of worksite are responsible for effective creation and
implementation of Hazard Communication Information as well as the requirements defined
within.

Inventory and appropriate storage:

 Current inventory lists should be maintained on site for all hazardous materials.
 Hazardous materials should be appropriately stored to avoid losses:
– Proper containment
– Proper placement
– Protected from unauthorized access
– No leakage

ingredients; hazards identification; first aid

Hazardous Material Communication

The importance of training is to:

 Understand the risks involved in hazardous material handling.
 Know the correct Personal Protective Equipment to be used for the different types of
materials.
 Be able to find, read and use the Safety Data Sheets.
 Put into practice the appropriate emergency response plans in the case of incidents.

Hazardous Material Transportation

 Hazardous Materials can only be transported by personnel with the appropriate training on regional
requirements.
 Packaging loaded with hazardous materials must have the correct shipping papers and label or placards
according to regional and final location requirements.
 During transportation, SDS for all materials being transported must accompany the materials.
 Hazardous materials must be protected at all times to avoid exposure to the general public.

 The personnel in charge of a location/worksite are responsible for effective creation and
implementation of Hazard Communication Information as well as the requirements defined
within.
 All persons handling, transporting and/or using hazardous materials are responsible for
conducting work in a safe manner.
 Hazardous materials can be and are used safely every day with the appropriate
precautions.
 Ultimately YOU have the right and an obligation to stop work if it seems unsafe.
