What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthsis: The way in which green
plants make food
• The sun = source of most energy on Earth

Have you ever seen a fat plant?
• Plants store glucose as starch

• Starch: remember from last year

– carbohydrate
– Slow releasing energy
– Turns iodine blue/black
To show that starch is made by a
plant in photosynthesis
Part 1: preparing the plant
1. Destarch a plant by putting
in the dark for 2 days
2. Cover some leaves with
tinfoil
3. The leaves not covered =
control
4. Place in strong light
overnight (at least 6 hrs)
Part 2: test leaves for starch
1. Boil leaves in water
for a few mins

2. Soak in hot alcohol for

10 mins

NO BUNSEN
BURNERS
3. Leaves in boiling 4. Test leaves with iodine
water for 30 secs

Observe colour change:

Starch present

Starch absent

Characteristics of Living Things

1. Nutrition 2. Respiration 3. Excretion

4. Growth 5. Reproduction 6. Movement

7. Response
What do does “tropism” mean?
Tropism: change in growth of a plant in
response to an outside stimulus
• Can you think of something that might
influence the growth of a plant?
Phototropism
Phototropism: the change in growth of a
plant in response to light
To investigate phototropism
What do you think will happen?
Geotropism
Geotropism: the
change in growth of a
plant in response to
gravity
To investigate geotropism
• Put pre-soaked
seeds in damp
tissue
• Point seeds in
different directions
• Leave to grow
• Observe what
happens
