Competency 001: The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the
development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is
shared and supported by the school community.


 I have been afforded the opportunity to my internship under the principal of Odom
Elementary, Aldine ISD and be part of the Site Based Decision Making Committee at my
son’s school (C. E. King Middle School). Both opportunities have given me a chance to
experience the importance of having a shared vision with the community (parents,
business partners, etc.) and school staff. Building and establishing relationships with the
school community, promotes a positive and successful campus culture.
Competency 002
The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of
the school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize
resources to promote student success.


 As a Special Education Counselor, I am knowledgeable of how to respond to the diverse
interests and needs of ALL students. I like to stay in contact with my parents, assist, and
provide them with additional resources to help support their child(ren).

 My experiences as a counselor and teacher have been, most parents want to know and feel
someone genuinely care about their child(ren). I plan to continue my efforts of reaching out
to the parents and community as an administrator or program director. My goal is to put
the needs of ALL my students first.
Competency 003
The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical and
legal manner.


 As leader and woman of GOD, I believe I conduct myself in an ethical and professional
manner daily. You never know who is watching!

 Having been working in Special Education for 15 years, I try my best to stay within the
legal guidelines for all policies and procedures.
Competency 004
The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of
curricula and strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of
curriculum, instruction, resources, and assessment; and promote the use of varied
assessments to measure student performance.


 In my current position, I don’t really get a chance to observe the implementation of the
curriculum program like I want to. I am usually traveling from school to school dealing
with behavior challenges.

 My desire is to be able to attend come curriculum professional developments, so I can learn


if the curriculum being taught in the classroom is aligned with the state requirements.
Competency 005
The principal knows how to advocate,. nurture, and sustain an instructional program and a
campus culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.


 During my tenure as a Special Education Teacher and as a Counselor, I have had the
opportunity to be part of the planning team and a presenter for district level Professional
Developments (ELA and Behavior). I have learned the Professional Developments have to
gained the interest and be conducive to the learning of new strategies and techniques for
classroom performance.

 I was able to present information that would be helpful to teachers in a classroom setting
and information that would work best for students with a disability. As I continue to grow
and learn, I would love to attend additional trainings, so I can come back to my district and
present researched based practices for all students to be successful in the classroom.
Competency 006
The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development system to
improve the performance of all staff members, select and implement appropriate models for
supervision and staff development, and apply the legal requirements for personnel
management.


 I have not had much experience with this competency area; however, I was able to sit,
observe, and take notes of my mentor do observations of some her staff and provide them
with positive, constructive, and supportive feedback for improving classroom
performances and techniques to keep the students engaged in learning.
Competency 007
The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving
skills to ensure an effective learning environment.


 I feel confident in this area, but there is always room to grow. As a counselor, I partner
with outside community resources, school staff, and parents to ensure the success of
students and will continue to collaborate and partner with those who have an educational
need for the students.

 As a school leader, you have to build relationships with all stakeholders to have an
effective learning environment. I believe the relationships school leaders build or the lack
of relationships determine the morale and climate of the school environment.
Competency 008
The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management in
relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and
technology use.


 Of all the competencies areas, competency 008 is my weakest area and I need to gain more
knowledge of how Principals are to appropriately budget, allocate, and manage funds for
the different school programs. My mentor showed me the breakdown of how she and her
staff make sure funds are allocated in its appropriate area and I still don’t feel comfortable
with the process.
Competency 009
The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to the campus
physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.


 I lack the experience and training of implementing strategies to ensure the physical plant
and equipment are operating safely. I need assistance, hands on training, and support for
this matter.

 As for addressing safety and emergency concerns of the students, I am aware of the
procedures; however, I don’t get a chance to familiarize and practice the procedures due to
my extra duties.
