Passive Voice

To be + verb 3
Tense Form Example
Simple Present is/am/are + verb 3 The red book is read by Jane

Simple Past Was/were + verb 3 The red book was read by Jane

Present Continuous Is/am/are + being + verb 3 The red book is being read by Jane

Past Continuous Was/were + being + verb 3 The red book was being read by Jane

Present perfect Has/have + been + verb 3 The red book has been read by Jane

Past perfect Had + been + verb 3 The red book had been read by Jane

Modals Modals + be + verb 3 The red book will be read by Jane


Passive without “by”
1. If the subject is not very important
> The rice is planted in East Java
2. If the subject is unknown
> Someone was stolen my pen
Stative Passive
1. Stative verb is used to suggest mental states,
opinion, position, thought, beliefs, etc
2. Verbs that indicate state passive are mostly used
with a preposition. (e.g married to, satisfied with,
bored with)
