ACTIVITY ON ARROW (AOA)
OR ADM (ARROW DIAGRAMMING
METHOD)
• is a type of network diagram in which activities are
represented by arrows, which are connected to
each other through nodes.
• Activity originates and ends at a node. Nodes are
used to represent start and end of an activity in a
sequence.
• Starting node of an activity is also referred as
activity’s i-node. And ending node of an activity is
also referred as activity’s j-node. This method is also
known as I-J method of diagramming.
ACTIVITY ON ARROW (AOA)
OR ADM (ARROW DIAGRAMMING METHOD)

• Each activity carries a brief description usually

printed on the logical diagram, the activity name or
symbol and the time duration.
• Used by CPM (Critical Path Method) and PERT
(Program Evaluation Review Technique) to visualize
the project as a network.
RULES IN CONSTRUCTING A NETWORK
(ACTIVITY ON ARROW )

• Draw arrows from left to right.

• Before an activity can begin, its preceding
activities must be completed.
• Each activity must have a unique number.
Numbers must be greater than its
predecessors.
• Always number the nodes after the diagram
is completed.
• Minimize crossovers whenever possible.
• Arrows should not intersect.
• Avoids illogical looping.
• Use dummy activities if needed.
DUMMY ACTIVITY

• represented by dashed arrow.

• used to represent a connection between
events in order to maintain a logic in the
network.
It is used in two situations:

• When two or more • When two or more

activities start and end activities share the
at the same nodes. same precedence
activity but not all the
precedence are
shared.
