Background to study
 Water is the most essential basic substance in our evolution and daily lives
 Despite it being very essential, humans are faced with its challenges in its
sustainability due to its scarcity.
 Water scarcity is one of the major problems facing cities of the world and
wastage during transmission has being identified as a major culprit.
 This problem is quietly related to poor water allocation, inefficient use and
lack of water management.
 Furthermore, in places where clean water is scarce in populated environs
such as hostels, hotels, camps, industries or wasting household overusing due
to overpopulation in most cases tend to limit the availability of it for its
optimum usage.
 In view of these, a design approach which involves a GSM based water level
controller and management is developed to detect the level of water in
overhead tank and also turn on/off the pump when just about to overflow
Statement of the Problem

During the transmission; pumping from an underground source such as drilled

borehole, wells or reservoir into an overhead tank, the most traditional method of
knowing the water level present in the tank is by tapping the side of the tank.
And if otherwise, there would be wastage of water and also wastage in electric
power which also result in other severe consequences especially in Nigeria where
we are faced with deep restrictions in power sector.
Various approaches have been used to tackle water level monitoring issue by
researchers, the most reliable of them is the approach employed by Khaled Rheza
(2010) to monitor water level through wireless and wired mode of communication
as an interactive medium. This method may be very effective but its use of
wireless communication is not necessarily needed to address this issue.
Thus, a device to detect water level to avoid overflow and excessive of electric
power and communicate with the user via GSM is required as a matter of urgency.
Project Justification
Water level controller came into existence as a result of
human error and inconsistency that is associated with
manually operated pump.
At times, one may not know the level of water dropped
low until its completely empty. This was the issue that
leads to idea of automatic water controller, in this case
GSM module is used as the interactive medium to user.
Project Objectives
The goal of this design is expected to accomplish a built automatic water
level control based on GSM. The specific objectives are:
i. To design circuit schematic for GSM based automatic water controller.
ii. To construct the GSM based automatic water controller
iii To test the implementation
Review of related works cont.
There are many approach employed by different researchers all over the world
to control water level in overhead tanks, the following shows review of related
works employed by these authors:
Khaled Reza et al., (2010). Design of Microcontroller Automated water level
Sensing and Controlling, Proceedings of the World Congress on Engineering and
Computer Science Vol. 1
The researcher used an 8-bit microcontroller, an inverter, a reserve tank, water
tank and water pump. The pump is controlled using water level sensors to detect
the water level, inverted sensor data used as input of microcontroller, he also
used MPLAB programming software to write into PIC.
The monitoring and controlling system uses life device like laptop or mobile
phone so as to be controlled remotely through useful wireless monitoring
controlling system.
LIMITATIONS
1. The are financial restriction in the MPLAB software used to instruct the PIC
2. The web-based technology used here is logically unnecessary, sms via the
user’s phone is sufficient enough.
Review of Related works
Anyanwu N, et al (2012), Design and Implementation of a Water Level Controller, Nigerian Journal of T
faculty of Engineering, University of Nigeria, Vol. 31
These authors went a long way in designing and implementing a simple feed-back regulator for use in
water level sensing and control. MC14066 is used as an IC to accomplish this task, the liquid level is used
as an input to control power supply to the pump, the sensors selected for this work functions based
upon the principle of electrical conductivity of water due to the presence of dissolved salts. The tank
used here is fabricated out of a galvanized iron sheet to be equipped with inlet and outlet pipes. In this
design all that is required is to get the pump to start working when its below a certain height and to
stop working when the water level reaches a certain height.

BENEFITS
This approach is fully utilized and applicable to industries and factories where water and other ionic
chemicals are usually stored in an overhead tank

LIMITATION:
1. The major set back in this approach is that the specifications used to achieve the goals of the design
is complex, especially in the case of the tank used here, where it has to be be specially built for this
purpose.
2. This design lack some extraordinary features as that of that of Khaled Rheza, such as the
communication medium with the user. echnology,
Review of Related works
Karan K, et al, (2015), Sensor Network Based Automated Irrigation system,
International Journal of Computer Science and Information Technologies, Vol. 6
These author introduced a design capable of controlling highly specialized tasks
in agricultural production, in essence, it helps farmers to avoid irrigation at the
wrong time of the day, reduce run off and from overwatering saturated soils
which will improve crop performance. Their design uses valves to turn ON/OFF
the pump, a pipe is connected to the water pump, the other end is connected to
the root of the plant, the opening and closing of the valve is done drop by using
rain gun and when the moisture level again become normal, the sensor senses it
and send a signal to microcontroller and the valve is then closed, this design also
make use of different sensors such as temperature and humidity.
BENEFITS
1. This design is highly applicable to agricultural process by helping farmers to
avoid excessive water on plant by avoiding runoff and maximize their profit.
LIMITATION
The only limitation in this work is that the components used to achieve the
specifications in this design is expensive, although it may not be completely used
in water transmission.
