What is the
effect of scary
movies on pulse
rate?
Increased levels
of pollution will
increase the
number of
mutations in frogs
Listening to Jazz
music will increase
science test grades.
Workers at a company were
assigned to one of two
conditions: One group
completed a stress
management training program;
another group of workers did
not participate in the training.
The number of sick days taken
by these workers was examined
for the next 2 months.
Students at a University were
split into two groups and each
received a different text for a
philosophy course. One group
received a traditional text book, while
the other received an interactive
textbook on a tablet computer. After
the course, the final exam grades
between the two groups of students
was compared.
Mr. Mandarich wanted to
see if the color of light shined
on a plant had an effect on the
number of leaves it had. He
gathered a group of the same
species of plants, gave them the
same amount of water, and did
the test for the same amount of
time. Only the color of light was
changed.
A study was
done to find if
different tire
brands affect the
braking distance of
a car.
The time it takes
to run a mile
depends on the
person’s running
speed.
The height of
bean plants
depends on the
amount of water
they receive.
The higher the
temperature of the
air in the oven, the
faster a cake will
bake.
Lemon trees
receiving the
most water
produced the
most lemons.
An investigation
found that more
potatoes were
produced when the soil
was fertilized more.
The amount of
pollution produced by
cars was measured for
cars using gasoline
containing different
amounts of lead.
A student wanted to test
how the mass of a paper
airplane affected the distance it
would fly. Paper clips were
added before each test flight. As
each paper clip was added, the
plane was tested to determine
how far it would fly.
Two groups of students
were tested to compare their
speed working math problems.
Each group was given the same
problems. One group used
calculators and the other group
computed without calculators.
Students of different ages
were given the same
puzzle to assemble. The
puzzle assembly time was
measured.
A student decided to set up an
experiment to see if cats preferred skim
milk or 2%milk. She put out a cup of
milk for 5 kittens and then measured
how much the kittens drank over the
course of a day. The same kittens were
used and the milk was served at the
same temperature. The student
discovered that the cats liked the 2%
more than the skim milk.
An experiment for a new
asthma medication was set
up into two groups. Group
one was given the new drug
for asthma, while group 2
was given a sugar pill. A
survey questionnaire is then
given to the two groups.
A scientist plants two rows of corn
for experimentation. She puts
fertilizer on row 1 but does not put
fertilizer on row 2. Both rows
receive the same amount of water
and light intensity. She checks the
growth of the corn over the course
of 5 months.
A student decides to set up an experiment
to see if detergent affects the growth of
seeds. He sets up 10 seed pots. 5 of the
seed pots will receive a small amount of
detergent in the soil. The other 5 seed pots
will not receive detergent. All 10 seed pots
will receive the same amount of water, the
same number of seeds, and the same type
of seeds. He grows the seeds for two
months and charts the growth every 2
days.
