CHAPTER 1
 INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

• The lack of suitable performance space puts our regional arts programs at risk. The
performance Arts Center will be the anchor facility for expanding the educational,
cultural and economic growth of the Cities and be a destination that will draw
new visitors to the region. Though Zamboanga do have venues to host such event
the capabilities of the said venue doesn’t concur the comfortability of the users.
• That being said Zamboanga City lacks a venue to promote and support art in all
forms, with the influx of new talents coming from different individuals and cultures,
the need to create a new facility that can introduced, promote and showcase
talents is an absolute must.
• Zamboanga city do represent world class talet, from a world class child singer
“Francis Concepcion” to a silver medalist weighlifter “hidiliyn Diaz” These
“International level talent” serves to set as an excellent example of how local
talents can bring international pride in the country. Zamboangas’ local talents can
represent and perform both in local and in international arena.
 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Zamboanga city is one of the city who have the potential to host major
events in region 9; such as palarong pambansa, fiesta pilar etc. the lack of
venue to host such event leads to problems such as:
• The city potential to host such event
• Vehicular circulation (traffic) because of the events doesn’t concur on
venues. The participants together with the community experience
tremendous time to reach to their destination
• Also, the Zamboanga siege made a huge negative impact on the city’s
image. This leads to downfall of the tourist industry in the city.
 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
GOALS
• The goal of this Performance Art Center is to be the core venue of important events
in the city, it will seek to facilitate the needs of the performers/local talents along
with the user through efficient and innovative architecture, it will serve as a symbol
of regaining Zamboanga’s vibrant image (through the local talents and its diverse
culture)
OBJECTIVE
• To introduce a venue for the various types of performing arts here in Zamboanga.
• To produce a venue that shall act as a sole presenter for the event and reflect
culture on its own way.
• To propose a Performance Art Center that can represent Zamboanga city on a
higher scale.
 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

• the study also shows the
problems and issues in terms of
constructing this proposal such
as the vehicle flow and its overall
impact to the community.
LIMITATIONS
• The limiting factor that could be
affecting the study of the
proposal would be :
• Limited release of populations
data for the cultural aspects.
• Lack of data gathered about
the performing arts building due
to no existing performance
center near the area.
• Limited data of artist and arts,
because of its low popularity and
low influence and are in need of
some promotion.
 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
TO THE READERS
• This research will help the readers to understand how the proponents give solution to the
problems like; 1) How to bring Zamboanguenos into one venue to perform their activities and
showcase the world-class talents. 2) How the Proposed Performance Art Center will lift up the dying
culture and boast the image of Zamboanga into higher scale

TO THE COMMUNITY
• Performance Art Center creates a sense of encouragement by bringing together the community
in one venue for all their activities making them comfortable in such a way that all of the major
activities are directed at one venue.

TO THE CITY
• The vibrant design concept aims to make Zamboanga’s image attract the attention of
Zaboanguenos and most probably the entire Filipino the that Zamboanga is no longer a war zone
place but a place where world class talent came from.
 ASSUMPTION

• The Performing Art Center is expected to be the main venue that act as a
magnet to those traditional activities that is being celebrated anywhere and
causes a problem. It attempts to be the converging point and a national
level of platform for people who are interested in performing arts. Because of
this project the image of Zamboanga city will be rebuild, it will serve as an
attraction a widening of a tourist and finally represents the city in a higher
state.
 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
• In summarization having a performance art center helps the community
and the citys’ image as a whole, Themes of transformation, adaptability
and diversity comes to their fullest expression. In effect giving the city a
plenty of venues in one and providing local art group with unlimited
possibilities to attract new audience with innovative programming.
• The new performance art center which will anchor all the activities and
will be the venue on hosting important and big events will not solely provide
a venue but to provide a new and innovative facility which will give new
experience to users and to the community through the guidelines on having
an effective performance art center. This will also help the tourism sector to
regain or build Zamboangas’ image through promoting our culture and the
talents of the Zamboanguenos.
 CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

• Based on the RRL of this research the proponents found out that
architecture is highly influenced by the people, the culture, the trends of
facilities, and the social impact to the community. The performance art
center interacts with the influencing elements of architecture, it creates
spaces for people, it shapes their culture and it makes up a social impact to
a community as well as following the trends of facilities. Architecture is the
representation of these elements and it is achieved through architectural
process. The proposal won’t be effective is this element is set aside.
 CULTURE

PEOPLE
 METHODOLOGY

• The data gathering will be completed through researcher on various

books, survey, visit and interview on different government agencies,
individual and personal observation, and surfing from the internet. All this
information will be gathered together to formulate solutions to the problem
to be encountered during research and architectural solution.
• The information to be gathered will give to the researchers a clear view on
the proposal properly and, it should be legit in order for the proponents to
come up the right solution to the problem.
