ALIGNMENT TOLERANCES

Or how to know when you’re done!

B OFFSET A The average of A and B dial TIR readings divided by Two is the
Offset at the Midpoint.
all dial readings TIR
[ (A TIR) + (B TIR)  2 ]  2= Offset
Find Average TIR at the midpoint between A and B dial:
(+5 mils TIR) + (-11 mils TIR)  2 = -3 mils TIR Offset
+5 mils
Find Actual Offset divide the Average TIR by two:
CL FIXED -3 mils TIR  2 = - 1.5 mils Actual Offset
Midpoint/Average -3 mils
Compare the absolute Actual Offset value (1.5 mils) to your
-11mils
allowable alignment tolerances.
-11 mils

B ANGULARITY A Rise(vertical) divided by Run(horizontal) is one method of

measuring an angle(slope).
all dial readings TIR [ RISE (TIR)  RUN (inches) ]  2 = Angle
To determine (RISE) absolute distance from A to B dial readings.
(+5mils TIR) to (-11mils TIR) = 16 mils TIR (RISE)
+5 mils To find slope (“angle”) in TIR per /inch; Divide the (RISE) by
CL FIXED “X” (RUN) (8 inches in this example).
A to B
16 mils (RISE)
16 8 = 2 mils/inch TIR or 0.0020 inches/inch TIR (TIR/inch)

8 inches Divide TIR/inch above by two to find the actual slope(“angle”).

-11mils -11 mils
2 mils/inch  2 = 1 mil/inch or 0.001 inches/inch of slope(angle).
X (RUN) Compare actual slope (angle) determined above to your allowable
alignment tolerances.
