Introduction 2

 Untrafine grainded (UFG) metallic materials whose

mean grain size smaller than 1 µm are expected to
perform prominent mechanical properties. In order to
put the UFG materials to structural us, they must have
bulky dimension.

 Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is hopeful process to

fabricate bulky material with submicrometer grain sizes

 In recent years, various kind of SPD process have benn

proposed and the research works on the SPD and the
UFG materials have been energetically conducted
Accumulative Roll 3

Bonding

The Accumulative Roll Bonding is a only

SPD process using rolling deformation itself.

The ARB was invented by Nobuhiro Tsuji

in 1998
Principle of the ARB 4

 Rolling is the most advantageous metalworking process

for continuous production of plates, sheets and bar.
Principle of the ARB 5

 The rolling in ARB is not only a deformation process but

also a bonding process (roll-bonding)

 To achieve good bonding surface material is degreased

and wirebrushed before stacking

 Sometimes carried out elevated temperatures below the

recrystallization temperature of the materials
Principle of the ARB 6

 Procedures can be repeated limitlessly, its possible to

impose very large plastic strain on the materials in the
ARB process
Principle of the ARB 7

 The serious problem in the ARB process in fracture of the

mateterials

 Because large amount of total plastic strain is

accumulated in the materials and the rolling is nit a
hydrostatic process

 Edge cracks sometimes occur in the sheets especially at

higher cycles

 In certain kinds of materials, such as Al-Mg alloy, the

edge cracks greatly propagate into centre of the sheets
Principle of the ARB 8
Principle of the ARB 9

 In the most case, the mean grain thickness of the

pancake-shaped UFG are 100 – 200 nm

 Material with higher purity tend to show larger grain size

within the similar material

 ARB at low temperature result in smaller grain size within

the similar material
Conclusion 10

 The Accumulative Roll Bonding is a only SPD process using

rolling deformation between two material to become one
solid material

 The ARB starts with degreasing and wirebrushing the contact

surface, then stacked and rolled with 50% reduction

 The ARB process can be repeated limitlessly to achieved best

properties of materials
