Lamp Lumen Deterioration factor (LLD Factor) varies from lamp type to type
and can be found out by bellow chart.
Lamp Type LLD Factor

Mercury Lamps

Up to and including 700W 0.8

Over 700 W up to 1000W 0.7

Mercury Halide 0.7

High Pressure Sodium 0.9
Low Pressure Sodium 0.85
Fluorescent Tube (Standard Color)

Standard 40W to 80W 0.8

High out put 0.8

Very High out put 0.75

Blended Mercury – Tungsten 0.85
Tungsten 0.85

Method of finding Utilisation Factor (UF)

Before that it is required to calculate the room index by using following equation.

K = ( L x W ) / [( H1 - H0 ) x ( L + W )]

Where,
L – Room Length (m)
W – Room Width (m)
H1 – Height of luminary’s light emitting surface (m)
H0 – Height of the working plan (m)
Depending on the reflectance of Ceiling, Wall and Floor, reflectance factor figure has to decide
E.g. If it is considered that the reflectance from Ceiling, Wall and Floor in following
percentage, the reflectance factor figure will be as follows.
Ceiling – 70%, Wall – 50% and Floor – 30%

Then reflectance figure will be 753

Once the room index is calculated, by using below Table Utilisation Factor (UF)
can be found.

This table is given in the lighting catalog.

Maintenance Factor (MF): This is the ratio between the illuminance produce at the end of
maintenance and the illuminance produce at the time of installation.

This is usually considered as

Dirty - 0.7
Average – 0.8
Clean - 0.9
Specified illuminance levels (lux) in the specification for different areas are as follows.

Area / Location Illuminance Level (Lux)

Office Areas 400

Design / CAD Office 500
Meeting Rooms 400
Entrance lobby / Corridors 150 ~ 200
Dining Rooms 150 ~ 200
Document Store Rooms 300
Workshop Machine areas 300
Workshop material store areas 200
Worker Resting areas 200

Specimen Calculation for office area in ground floor
Room Dimensions and other data.
Length of the Room 15 m, Width of the Room 12 m
Height of the room 3.0 m, Height of working Plane 0.8 m
Reflectance: Ceiling 70%, Wall 50% and Working Plane 30%
Luminaries Photometric data: 4 x 18 W Fluorescent with a profile louver: 8000 Lm (1450 x 4)
Required Illuminance level: 400 lux
Maintenance Factor: 0.80

Based on above data reflectance figure is 753.

Room index K = ( L x W ) / [( H1 - H0 ) x ( L + W )]
K = ( 15 x 12 ) / [(3.0 – 0.8) x (15 + 12)]
K = 3.03
From the above table for K = 3.0 and Reflectance = 753, the utility factor is 0.74
N = (E x L x W) / ( NL x Φ x MF x UF x LLD)
N = (400 x 15 x 12) / (4 x 1450 x 0.8 x 0.74 x 0.8)
N = 26.2, Selected numbers of fittings = 25

Specimen Calculation for Lunch room in the ground floor
Room Dimensions and other data.
Length of the Room 11.725 m, Width of the Room 5 m
Height of the room 3.0 m, Height of working Plane 0.8 m
Reflectance: Ceiling 70%, Wall 50% and Working Plane 20%
Luminaries Photometric data: 2 x 36 W Fluorescent with a profile louver: 4700 lm (2x2350) Lm
Required Illuminance level: 200 lux
Maintenance Factor: 0.80

Based on above data reflectance figure is 752.

Room index K = ( L x W ) / [( H1 - H0 ) x ( L + W )]
K = ( 11.725 x 5 ) / [(3.0 – 0.8) x (11.725 + 5)]
K = 1.59
From the above table for K = 1.5 and Reflectance = 753, the utility factor is 0.63
N = (E x L x W) / ( NL x Φ x MF x UF x LLD)
N = (200 x 11.725 x 5) / (2 x 2350 x 0.8 x 0.63 x 0.8)
N = 6.1, Selected Numbers of fittings = 6 Calculation sheet

Preparation of lighting layout drawings

• Prepare lighting fixture schedule

• Space properly the selected light fittings in the layout drawing
• Arrange switching pattern according to the functionality of the building
• Energy saving aspects must be in cooperated in the switching arrangement
• Provide notation for the light fittings and switches for identification.
• Mark circuit arrangement on the drawing with circuit numbers
