Many engines are equipped with a bleeder valve to permit a technician to bleed
any trapped air from the cooling system.
The valve is loosened as coolant is poured into the system.
Because air is lighter than coolant, the air tends to float toward the highest part
of the cooling system.

The water pump is mounted on the front of the engine


block and is typically belt driven to ensure constant
coolant circulation whenever the engine is running.

With a cold engine, the thermostat stays


closed (A) to retain pressure and heat as
the engine warms up.

the radiator to be cooled.

This vacuum-operated heater-control valve uses a vacuum motor to
mechanically move the valve open and closed.

passenger compartment, based on settings of the heater control panel.
