DENTAL LAMINA Prepared By:

INTRODUCTION
 The stomatodeum, or also known as the primitive oral cavity, is
lined by stratified squamous epithelium called the oral ectoderm.
 This oral ectoderm contacts the endoderm of the foregut to form
the buccopharyngeal membrane.
 At about the 3rd weeks of gestation, this membrane ruptures.
 This allows the connection of stomatodeum with the foregut.
 Following this, the development of tooth is thought to be initiated
by the interaction between epithelium and connective tissue.

START
The first sign of tooth development is denoted,
when there is a presence of
condensation of ectomesenchymal cells, beneath
the epithelium and the future tooth bearing regions.
These condensed ectomesenchymal cells induces the
overlying epithelium to proliferate, forming an
epithelial thickening called

VESTIBULAR LAMINA
Vestibular lamina proliferates
into ectomesenchyme, and
undergoes degeneration to form
the vestibule.

Vestibule separates lips and

cheeks from tooth bearing area.
DENTAL LAMINA
During the 7th week of intrauterine
life, dental lamina proliferates into
the underlying ectomesenchyme

Forming U shaped band, along

with the dental arch in the future

This acts as the primordium for the

enamel organ of the deciduous
teeth.
Ectodermal
Differential gives rise to component of 10
proliferation at 10 deciduous teeth in
specific regions each arch.
 Successors of deciduous teeth
develop from the lingual
extensions (successional lamina),

 Whereas permanent molars

develop from the distal
extensions (accessional lamina).
FATE OF DENTAL LAMINA
 As tooth development proceeds, dental lamina will degenerate as
it will be no longer needed.
 The average activity of dental lamina is about 5 years.
 However, few remnant cells called ‘Cell rests of Serres’ may
remain even after the degeneration of dental lamina.
 In the future, under certain conditions, these unwanted
proliferation of cells may give rise to cysts or tumours.

SUPERNUMERARY TEETH
 It is suggested that supernumerary teeth develop from a third bud
arising from the dental lamina near the regular tooth bud.
 This happens when dental lamina fails to degenerate and thus it continue
to induce the formation of tooth bud.
