AVR versus Static Excitation System
Comparison
- Just positive ceiling voltage capability - Positive and negative ceiling voltage
capabilities
- Exciter response limited by the exciter machine - Fast response (<20ms) in both directions
time constant (>500ms) (best contribution to dynamic stability and
performance)
- Field discharge with natural time constant - Fast field discharge by discharge resistor or
inverter operation
Size of exciter machine depends on nominal -Size of excitation transformer depends on
machine speed field requirements only
No sliprings (less maintenance and dust) Shorter shaft (torsional oscillations)

~ +
Auxiliary The Control Electronics can start the unit in
voltage most cases without field flashing due to the
remenance of the generator or at least with
a very small field flashing current

Power System Stabilizer (PSS)
Facts
• PSS is an add-on functionality in UNITROL excitation systems
• It is mandatory in some countries (e.g. USA) for all power plants exceeding
a certain size (e.g. >= 50 MVA)

Power System Stabilizer (PSS)
Requirements and use
• Required for:
– All turbo-generators (nuclear, steam, gas)
– Remote power plants with long distances to major consumer center
