 What is strain energy?
 What is strain energy density?
 What is elastic strain energy for Normal stress?
 Strain energy is defined as “When a body is subjected to gradual,
sudden or impact load, the body deforms and work is done upon it. If
the elastic limit is not exceed, this work is stored in the body. This work
done or energy stored in the body is called strain energy”.
 When force or load is applied it undergoes some deformation in shape,
size, and length. Due to deformation the body stores energy.
 When the applied force is released, the whole system returns to its
original shape.
 The strain energy is equal to the work done by slowly increasing load
applied to a material.
1. Let’s assume a prismatic bar is subjected to an axial or a normal load.
2. This external causes deflection of the bar. Which means, external
forces is doing some work by deforming the bar (W=F.d).
3. When we see this is bar’s perspective, this deformation due to load is
applied by the bar staining i.e. molecules are displacing. And energy
levels are increased in the bar as its absorbs the work of external
force (i.e. bar can’t expand freely it resists, so there is energy loss.
4. Now once we removed the load, bar returns to its original position
depending upon whether the applied load is under the elastic limit.
5. So, one can say that, by staining, the energy level in the bar increased
due to absorption of the work by the external force n (work is also a
form of energy).
6. Thus, this energy is stored in a body in the form of Strain Energy and
this energy can be recovered partially or fully (if it’s beyond elastic
limit, body can’t get it’s original state.
7. This can be calculated by plotting deformation on X-axis and load on
Y-axis.
8. We observe a curve on the graph and area under the curve gives us
stain energy i.e. by integration.
The SI unit of strain energy is Newton meter (N.m) or
Joule (j).

Examples:- Rubber band regaining its shape and Springs

etc.
The strain energy density of a material
is defined as “the strain energy per unit
volume”.
It is equal to the area under the stress-
strain diagram of a material.
Where,
The SI unit of strain energy density
is Newton per meter square
(N/m^2) or Joule per meter cube
(J/m^3).
 The elastic strain energy is defined as “the work done in deforming a
solid material within its elastic limit”.

“OR”

 AS we know that work is the form of energy. So the elastic energy strain
energy is defined as “the internal work done in deforming the body by
the action of externally applied forces (Normal forces). This energy in
elastic body is called elastic strain energy”.
Mathematically, the elastic strain energy is equal to
