CLIENT BACKGROUND
My target client is a biracial female, 31 years of age from Jersey City, New Jersey,
she is a divorced mother of 5 and currently unemployed. The client fled a 8 year dv
situation and was transported by NJ DSS to the area of her closest known relations, in
Robeson County, NC. The client has been diagnosed with PTSD, Depression and
anxiety disorder stemming from her history of a abuse and long standing custody
battle. The clients children suffer from PTSD, ADHD and her 11 y/o suffers from ODD
(oppositional defiance disorder). The client has a Associates degree in medical office
assisting and hopes to find a job in the medical field. She has hopes of finding long
term housing and stability for her and her children and also hopes to go back to
school and further her education. During her time battling DV and the court system
the client developed extensive knowledge of court precedent and domestic violence
law and defended herself in an effort that proved valiant.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Client and her children are experiencing homelessness, lack of financial resources
and lack of mental health treatment due to fleeing a domestic violence situation.
Client is an out of state resident seeking refuge in a county that has recently
experienced catastrophic devastation due to a natural disaster.
STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS
Client Strengths Client Limitations
Intelligent Does not take criticism or suggestion
well
Resilient
Feels that no one understands her
Resourceful situation
Hopeful Feels that seeking help limits her
Positive attitude independence
WHAT ARE SOME BIASES YOU HAD GOING INTO
THE INTERVIEW?
 From conducting the initial shelter interview and listening to the client talk, initially I
believed the client to be searching for financial assistance and free housing. This bias
was formed from the clients repeated asking of when she could find a house, how big
could it be and how much and how long will they pay for it. When this client arrived I
knew she would be the client for my case presentation simply because I wanted to
know more about her and her circumstances and intentions.
WHAT WERE SOME VALUE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
YOU AND THE CLIENT?
Clients Values My Personal Values
Her children God and spiritiaulity
Finding a home My daughter and family
Taking care of her kids Education
Depending on no one else Hard Work
Having a job to provide for her kids Stability
Independence Honesty and humility
Freedom
WHAT EVENTS OR LIFE EXPERIENCES HAVE
SHAPED THEM INTO THE PERSON THEY ARE?
Client stated she was from a impoverish household and began experiencing sexual
abuse at a young age. Client feels this distorted her view of men and relationships
and believes this is why she did not initially see the damage her abusive relationship
was doing. Client became a mother in her late teens, all her children are fathered by
her abuser. Since she had not had a traditional nuclear family during her upbringing
she wanted that for her own children. The client eventually married her abuser and
the abuse worsened trickling down to her children as well. The client was forced to
leave her home in New Jersey and flee to Robeson County in order to escape her
abuser. The client has went through years of trauma, court, counseling and has/is
dealing with mental illness in herself as well as her children. These events and more
have contributed in shaping my clients views, opinions and personality.
WHAT ARE CLIENT GOALS AND WHAT IS THE STAFF
RECOMMENDATION ABOUT DIAGNOSIS,
INTERVENTIONS OR TREATMENT?
Clients short term goal was to obtain safe housing which was provided with a shelter
intake and referral
Clients long term goals are to obtain gainful employment, stable and reliable
housing and to provide a flourishing environment for her children.
She also wishes to have access to counseling services both for trauma and mental
illness for herself and her children.
SFVC can help client obtain all goals through interventions designed to assist in
obtaining housing, employment and recommending counseling services for the client
and her children
Rapid rehousing referrals, financial literacy, resume building, referrals to couseling
services for mental illness.
WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAY ON THEIR
DIAGNOSIS/PROBLEM/TREATMENT?
Statistics on the frequency of domestic violence are staggering:
4,77,400 women in the US experience partner violence each year
Every 9 seconds someone is a victim of domestic violence
Women age 18-34 are at the greatest risk for entering into a long term domestic violence
relationship
3 or more women are murdered each day by their spouse or partner
Domestic violence is the 3rd leading cause for homelessness in the US
Types of DV include physical, mental, sexual, verbal, psychological and economical
Long term effects of DV are physical and mental health disparities, children's physical and
mental development and productivity, financial stability and earning potential.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE AGENCY
Since conducting this interview the client has obtained approval for housing and
found a production job.
 The client was able to receive these services through the help of the agency.
The client feels the agency stood by and helped her accomplish everything they said
they would and have helped her have a more positive outlook on her future.
She feels the agency is functioning to its best potential and was very helpful.
After ten weeks with the agency and seeing how the agencies functions and the
hearts of its employees I truly feel the agency is a blessing to this community and the
only improvement I would like to see is for the agency to get in house counseling
services for clients. Hopefully one day a grant will be written that will allow that plan
to come to fruition.
