The Philippine Setting
Development of Aviation
 DURING WWI
17 March 1917 - The bill of then
Senate President Manuel L. Quezon
regarding the creation of the Philippine
National Guard (PNG) was approved in
anticipation of the outbreak of hostility
between US & Germany.
PNG created an aviation unit, and 50
Filipinos were trained in the Martin type
“S” aircraft stationed at Corregiedor.
Later this unit was disbanded because
the planes were sent to Europe.
 After WWI
1919 - United States bi-planes
(Seagull & Jenny) were brought to
the Philippines for commercial air
service utilizing the 50 filipinos
trained by the PNG @ P200 per
month.
Curtis School of Aviation - the
first civilian flying school used to
train military pilots. This school was
later named“The Philippine School
of Aviation”.
 Jan 1935 - Philippine Constabulary
Air Corps (PCAC) was established
to support the peace and order
mission of the Philippine
Constabulary.
 11 Jan 1936 - the Commonwealth
Act #1 transformed the PC to PA
renaming PCAC to Philippine Army
Air Corps (PAAC).
 May 1936 - PAAC Flying School
opened for training.
 1941 - Philippine Air Lines (PAL),
Asia’s first airlines, made its first
maiden flight from Neilson Airport
in Makati to Baguio.
 1948 - PAAC to Philippine Air Force
Flying School (PAFFS)
 1988 - Aboitiz Transport Group was
organized
 1993 - Aerolift Philippines was organized
 1995 to present - establishment of
new airlines (Grand Air, Cebu Pacific,
Laoag Air, Air Philippines, Asian Spirit)

 Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT)
- course training taken by student pilots
 Student-pilot - refers to an aviation
cadet or a student-officer
 Aviation Cadet - refers to a civilian
selected to undergo UPT at the PAF
Flying School
 Student-Officer - refers to a
commissioned officer in the
regular/reserve force selected to
undergo UPT at the PAF Flying School
