ARCTIC MONKEYS

Roberto
Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of
Sheffield.

Members:
The band consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, guitar, piano)
Matt Helders (drums, vocals),
Jamie Cook (guitar)
Nick O'Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals)
Former band member Andy Nicholson (bass guitar, backing vocals) left the band in
2006 shortly after their debut album was released.
History
• In 2001, neighbors Alex Turner and Jamie Cook, after receiving
electric guitars as a Christmas gift, formed the band along with
schoolmates Andy Nicholson and Matt Helders. Andy already
knew how to play the bass, so Matt finished on the drums.

• During the beginning of the band the original singer was Glyn
Jones, another student of Stocksbridge High School. Time after
Glyn left the band, Alex remained as vocalist and natural leader of
the band.

• The name of the band was devised by the guitarist, Jamie Cook.
Who always wanted to be in a band with said name
• Arctic monkeys had its first concert in 2003, after that the band recorded
some songs demos which were distributed free of charge in their
concerts. Over time the arctic monkeys fans began to spread their music,
making the arctic monkeys fame grow.

• When asked about the popularity of the band's MySpace site in an

interview with Prefix Magazine, the band said that they were unaware of
what it was, and that the site had originally been created by their fans.

• Eventually, they were signed to Domino in June 2005. The band said they
were attracted to the DIY ethic of Domino owner Laurence Bell, who ran
the label from his flat and only signed bands that he liked personally.
Impact on music:

Arctic Monkeys were heralded as one of the first

bands to come to public attention via the
Internet, with commentators suggesting they
represented the possibility of a change in the
way in which new bands are promoted and
marketed.
Genres
• The band has usually been categorized under
the indie rock, garage rock, and post-punk
revival genres.
