Why Mumbai – Ahmedabad?
This specific route is found to be feasible financially among the
following options that are considered:
 Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar (450 km approx.)
 Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad (650 km approx.)
 Mumbai – Ahmedabad (500 km approx.)
 Hyderabad-Dornakal -Vijaywada-Chennai (664 km approx.)
 Chennai-Bangalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulam (649 km approx.)
 Howrah-Haldia (135 km approx.)
 Delhi -Agra-Lucknow -Varanasi – Patna (991 km approx. )
Driving factors
 Traffic: Mumbai-Ahmedabad is among the busiest lines in the
country [ http://indiarailinfo.com/search/...] and is also a part of
the broader Mumbai-Delhi route over which the line might be
extended in the future. Any investor would look for routes with
the maximum travellers possible.
 Rich travellers: Mumbai-Ahmedabad route involves a number of
business executives and entrepreneurs who might not hesitate to
pay the heavy ticket price if the trip could be made in 2 hours.
Only a couple of other routes [involving Mumbai, Bangalore,
Hyderabad and Chennai] have this advantage.
Driving factors
 Flat terrain: The route is flat and almost right at the sea level. The
train moves completely in the yellow region on the left. This
makes the track investment less risky and less expensive [one
reason why Pune was left out]. Mumbai-BLR on the other hand
involves some elevation climb through the Western Ghats [dark
green zone].
 Land acquisition: It is possible that part of the line will be new -
instead of just over the existing routes. Gujarat has been
traditionally successful in land acquisition process. In most other
routes, the state governments are too weak to clear out the
impediments. Investors don't like too many delays.
Why the current route?
The following routes are analysed by Japan International Cooperation
Agency(JICA) Ministry of Railways, Republic of India(MOR)

 Alternative 1 (ALT1): Dedicated route for which new terminal station is proposed at
Mumbai , crossing Thane Creek by tunnel, connecting with new suburban station in Surat
and juxtaposed to existing stations at Vadodara & Ahmedabad. High speed operation is
available through all whole section.
 Alternative 2 (ALT2): Dedicated route for which new terminal station is propose at
Mumbai, crossing Thane Creek by Viaduct, juxtaposed to existing station at Surat and
connecting with new suburban stations at Vadodara and Ahmedabad. High speed
operation is available through all whole section.
 Alternative 3 (ALT3): ALT3 route considers interoperability that HSR and existing railway are
mixed in Mumbai, Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad areas. High speed operation is
difficult in some sections.
