Setting project units

1. Open Project Settings 2. Go to the Units tab. 3. Select the corresponding

from the Project menu Change Units system coordinate system from
to correct settings the Projection button

Units must be set correct when importing data. There is no

automatic unit conversion except when importing data.
Since Petrel recognizes the import data just as numbers, i.e.
depths, changing the units will not change the data itself
Seismic bulk data storage – the seismic main folder

1. Insert ‘New seismic 2. The Seismic main folder 3. Right click or use the Insert menu
main folder’ appears in the Input to add seismic survey folders
pane with a predefined
hierarchy

2 3

Note: The seismic main folder contains by default a Vintage folder (to be explained later),
Interp survey inclusion filters and an Interpretation folder with an active seismic horizon. Only
one Seismic main folder can exist in a project.
Loading seismic data - Import with preset parameters

1. Right click on a 2. Select the file, set ‘Files 3. Set corresponding data type
survey folder and use of type’ and click Open (2D/3D), define vintage and
‘Import (on selection)’ Line detection method

1 2

Note: If selecting Line detection method – Automatic, trace headers will be analyzed and the
most likely line/inline and trace/crossline headers are selected. When the automatic method is
selected, scanning is unavailable since the headers are undetermined until the SEGY file is read.
Loading seismic data - Import parameters

4. Set Line detection method other than 5. It is possible to scan 6. In the Input Data Dialog
Automatic. Specify Inline/crossline a specified number window, select the desired
number byte positions. For 2D lines, byte of traces to QC the color template and correct
position for CDP and SP is changeable parameter selection domain

Note: Messages related to import

of seismic data is added to the
Petrel messages log
Seismic vintages

1. Expand the Vintages folder 1

found in the Seismic main folder

2
2. The vintage names are given
sequentially when importing
data using Set default vintage

3
3. All vintage names are editable
in the Settings dialog box for
each of them

4. Vintages are mainly used to 4

display the same line number
and outline from different
seismic cube versions in an
interpretation window
SEG-Y settings
1. Open settings for the imported 2. The three sub tabs contain loading
seismic, go to the SEG-Y parameters, and listing of the binary
Settings tab and ASCII headers

1 2
Seismic data - Geometry
1. Go to the Geometry 2. Lateral geometry and Lateral 3. Vertical geometry are available
tab of the seismic translation/ rotation are available for edit independent of the
input data for edit dependent on the loading loading method of the seismic
method of the seismic

1 2 3

Note: If loading 2D seismic, 3D seismic in ZGY format or 3D seismic SEG-Y with preset
parameters and selecting Line detection method – Automatic, Lateral geometry and Lateral
translation/rotation cannot be changed. The remaining methods for loading 3D SEG-Y data
enables redefining the geometrical extent of the seismic
Seismic data visualization in 3D windows

1. Expand the seismic cube and click on the default Inline and Crossline
2. To add additional Inlines, Crosslines, Randomlines and time slices, right click and select
from the menu.
3. To view the outline of a 3D volume, click on the check box in front of the volume name
4. To display seismic 2D lines, click on the check box in front of the linename

2
Seismic data visualization in Base map windows

1. Double click on the Survey folder(s)

2. Under the Style tab specify the Base Map annotation
3. Open a 2D Window and display the seismic lines (e.g. Inlines, Crosslines, Random lines and 2D lines)

1
3

2
Survey manager
1. Right click on a survey folder 2. The appearance of the spreadsheet is
and select Survey manager controlled by clicking on the Select columns
to display in Survey manager icon

3 3. Columns displayed in
the Survey manager
and their order is
controlled by selecting
and moving the entries
up and down in the list

2
Mis-tie analysis
1. Right click on a seismic
survey folder containing
2D lines and select Insert
2
mis-tie set

2. Select the correct vintage

to work with in the 1
appearing selection box

3. The mis-tie manger

controls which lines to 3
correct for, what and how
corrections is performed.

4. The Mis-tie set will be put

under the seismic survey
folder in the Input tab

4
Crop a volume

1. Select Insert virtual cropped volume from the right click menu on the seismic cube of interest
2. A new virtual seismic cube (identical to the original) is put under the original seismic cube folder in the
Input pane denoted with [Crop] behind the original name
3. The virtual seismic cube can be cropped manually by activating Select/pick mode then drag the green
handles (a) or by specifying cropping parameters in the Cropping tab under the Settings dialog (b)

Realize a volume

1. To make a new physical cube in the ZGY bricked seismic format, go to the Operations tab under the
Settings dialog, Realize sub-tab
2. Select the Source amplitude range and realization quality
3. Click on Realize
4. The new realized cube will be put under the seismic survey folder in the Input tab

3
Seismic calculator

1. Right click on a seismic volume and select Calculator from the appearing menu
2. Give in the equation by typing and selecting from the seismic variables and calculator buttons
3. Use the blue drop in arrow to drop in non-seismic objects (surfaces and functions)
4. Click on Enter to execute the equation
5. The new seismic volume is created in the input tree as a virtual calculator volume
6. The virtual calculator volume will have the seismic calculator available as a Settings tab

Volume walls

1. Click to display the preferred seismic cube in a 3D window. Only bricked seismic cubes (ZGY format)
can be used
2. Open Settings and go to the 3D style tab
3. Toggle on Volume walls and select the method of preference

2
Transfer data through the Reference project tool

1. Right click on File on the top menu bar and select Reference project tool
2. Click on the Open project icon and choose the correct project
3. Choose the data to transfer, tick it on the right hand side and use the blue arrow to import. Save your
project to complete the data capture

1 3

Note: The reference project must have the

same project units as the local project to be
able to transfer data between the two. A
warning message is given if a mismatch
exists.

2
Export Seismic data

1. Right click on a Seismic 2. Choose SEG-Y or ZGY as output 3. Complete the

3D cube or a Seismic 2D format. Specify output File name Export dialogs to
