Just war

By: Tommy O’Connor ,Ben Hackett Delaney, leo Hedigan

What is it?

Just war theory is a doctrine, also referred to as a tradition, of military ethics studied by
military leaders, theologians, ethicists and policy makers. The purpose of the doctrine is
to ensure war is morally justifiable through a series of criteria, all of which must be met
for a war to be considered justified.

I chose this topic as I wanted to figure out at what point you draw the line to start a war
Law on just war JUS IN BELLO The conditions required for the just conduct of
war;

● PROPORTIONALITY-The proportionality of the use of

JUS AD BELLUM- conditions required to force in a war. The degree of allowable force used in the
start just war. war must be measured against the force required to
correct the Just cause and limited by Just Intention
● Just authority. ● DISCRIMINATION-The combatants discriminate between
combatants and noncombatants. Innocent, nonmilitary
● Just cause. people should never be made the target of attacks.
● Just intention. ● RESPONSIBILITY-A country is not responsible for
● Last resort unexpected side effects of its military activity as long as
the following three conditions are met:
(a) The action must carry the intention to produce good
consequences.
(b) The bad effects were not intended.
(c) The good of the war must outweigh the damage done
by it.
Christianity’s view on just war
Many Christians believe in the just war theory, that war is wrong except in certain circumstances.

War can only be started and controlled by the authority of the state
There has to be a just cause; those you are attacking much be attacked because they deserve it.
The war must be fought to promote good and not evil.
When it is over peace and justice must be restored.
All other ways of solving the problem must be tried. War must be the last resort.
You must use only enough force to achieve your goals innocent civilians must not be made to
suffer.
War can never be good however it might be less wrong than refusing to go to war. The ‘just war’
idea is one Christian view of war, if war is said to be just it is on the side of justice which ultimately
comes from god.
Hindu views

Hindu attitudes to war and peace are based on the teachings of Hindu sacred texts such
as the Vedas, the Laws of Manu and the Bhagavad Gita. Ahimsa (a very important belief
in Hinduism) means trying to fight injustice and evil but without using any physical force.
... However, war is not forbidden in Hinduism.

Think thou also of thy duty and do not waver. There is no greater good for a warrior
than to fight in a righteous(just) war.
Bhagavad Gita 2:31
In comparison

Both of these religions follow similar views however strict Christians do not believe
in war ,bu even if you are a strict Hindu war is not forbidden.

And average Christian or Hindu believes if a war is just “just war theory” that they
are allowed to fight
Our views
We believe that if a war falls under the category of being a just war it is
worth fighting as there may be millions of people being oppressed or their
human rights being violent and we believe it is important to free these
people.
