key
 To factor a number means to break it up into numbers
that can be multiplied together to get the original
number. (avvanta.com)
 Example: 2 x 3= 6

What is  2 and 3 are both factors of 6

 In this lesson, we will be learning how to factor using

factoring? the F.O.I.L method. Our end result will be a trinomial.
 Trinomial- algebraic expression consisting of three
terms
 Example: x2 +11x+26

Menu
 The ”F” in F.O.I.L stands for First.
 To factor a trinomial, we must first multiply the first 2
terms in each binomial together.

 Start with our given expression: (x+3) (x+4) =

First
 (x+3)(x+4)
Binomial
 x * x = x2

Menu
 The “O” in F.O.I.L stands for Outer.
 The second step is to multiply the 2 outer terms in each
binomial together.

Outer
 ( x+3) (x+4)
 x * 4 = 4x

Menu
 The ”I” in F.O.I.L stands for inner.
 The third step is to multiply the inner terms in each
binomial together.

Inner
 (x + 3) (x + 4)
 3 * x = 3x

Menu
 The “L” in F.O.I.L stands for last.
 Next, multiple the last 2 terms in each binomial together

Last  ( x+ 3) (x+4)
 3 * 4 = 12

Menu
 Finally, we will add all of terms together and simplify.

First  ( x+3) (x+4)

Outer  X2 + 4x + 3x + 12
Inner  4x + 3x = 7x
Last
 x2 + 7x + 12 Final Solution

Menu
 (x + 2) (x + 4)=
 (x + 8) (x + 5)=
Practice  ( x + 7) (x + 4)=
Problems  ( x + 5) (x + 3)=
 ( x + 1) ( x + 6)=

Menu
 (x + 2) (x + 4)= x2 + 6x + 8
 (x + 8) (x + 5)= x2 + 13x + 40
 ( x + 7) (x + 4)= x2 + 11x + 28

Answer Key  ( x + 5) (x + 3)= x2 + 8x + 15

 ( x + 1) ( x + 6)= x2 + 7x + 6
