WHAT IS NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Behavior and elements of speech aside from the words themselves that transmit
meaning.

Non-verbal communication includes pitch, speed, tone and volume of voice,


gestures and facial expressions, body posture, stance, and proximity to the
listener, eye movements and contact, and dress and appearance.

Research suggests that only 5 percent effect is produced by the spoken word, 45
percent by the tone, inflexion, and other elements of voice, and 50 percent by
body language, movements, eye contact, etc.

1.PARALANGUAGE

The study of Paralanguage focuses on how to say and what to say. It is


mainly broken down into three groups: vocal characterizers, vocal qualifiers
and vocal segregates. Vocal characterizers include things like yawning,
laughing, crying and moaning, which convey meanings to an audience. Vocal
qualifiers include such elements as tone, tempo, rhythm, pitch and volume.
For example, speaking rapidly and in a high pitch indicates excitement in many
cultures. Vocal segregates include such sounds as “uh-uh” or “mmmm,” noises
which convey messages about internal feelings, such as dissent or pleasure.
2. KINESICS
The word kinesics comes from the root word kinesis, which means “movement,” and refers to the
study of hand, arm, body, and face movements.

Gestures

Adaptors are touching behaviors and movements that indicate internal states typically related to
arousal or anxiety. Adaptors can be targeted toward the self, objects, or others.

Emblems are those gestures that have a meaning and understood by the public at large.
Illustrators are the gestures that go with what we are saying verbally

Regulators are the gestures that controls the communication exchange.

Facial Expressions

These are capable of showing attitude and emotion. Eg – Eyes, Eyebrows, Root of then nose
3. PROXEMICS
Proxemics is the study of human use of space and the effects that population
density has on behaviour, communication, and social interaction.

1. Intimate Distance (18 inch) for embracing, touching or whispering

2. Personal Distance (18 inch – 4 feet) for interactions among good friends or family.

3. Social Distance (4ft – 12ft) for interactions among acquaintances

4. Public Distance (12ft – 25ft) used for public speaking.


4. USE OF TIME

It shows about the use of time in communication. Time for seniors is more
flexible than juniors.

5. MODE OF DRESS

It shows about the mode of dress used in communication.
