Content
• Informal brief on subject.
• What’s for next session
– Module-1 overview
Silicon Valley Tech Innovation Ecosystem
Silicon Valley’s greatest innovation
– how companies evolve from ideas to successful enterprises
Science, Research, Scholarship
• Science:
– Acquisition of reliable but not infallible knowledge
of the world, including explanation of the
phenomena.
– Science is based on what is observable in the
universe, for something being subject of scientific
research it must be measurable.
• It relies on observations and experience.

• Research: Process of discovery of knowledge.

• Scholarship: Creative organization, criticism
and reinterpretation of facts and concepts.
Science
• Creative function
– To create (the basis for) statements about objects,
their relationship as well as explanation.
• Critical function
– Discovery and revision of mistakes and errors.
• Predictive function
– To produce better / newer explanations and
models.
Research
• The process of producing new knowledge
– Basic research
• About fundamental properties of objects, their
relationship and their behavior
– Theoretical Research
– Experimental Research
– Applied research
• Usefulness of objects and their behavior, may lead to
improvisation in technology
• Provides quicker results
Science Vs. Engineering
• Science: explain the world
• Engineering: affect the world

• Science: build artifacts to “explain”

• Engineering: build artifacts to “affect”

• What is the difference from artificial and natural?

– They are two faces of the same coin…
Technology
• The science of the application of knowledge to
practical purposes; OR
• The application of scientific knowledge to
practical purposes in a particular field.
To us ..
• Computer Science & Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Electronics Engineering
• Information Science & Technology
• Artificial Intelligence

Patenting etc.
Mullah Nasiruddin owned a small banana farm in Konya. He wanted
to sell 3000 bananas in the market of Istanbul which is 1000 Kms
away from Konya. The price of 1 banana is 10 gold-dinars in
Istanbul. His carrier, the donkey, is able to carry as much as 1000
bananas at-a-time, but requires to eat 1 banana to move 1 km.

Can we make Nasiruddin very rich in above situation?
