Fuel ( oil + coal ) is being burnt in the boiler furnace as a result of which flue gases are generated
in the furnace. The flue gases must be removed from the furnace in order to maintained the
continuity of combustion process & also a certain negative pressure (-10 mmwc ) must be
maintained in the furnace. This is the function of induced draft fans. The flue gas velocity in the
furnace is 12 m/sec.
For 210 MW units 2 Nos. of 50% capacity ID fans are used, specification are

3. FORCED DRAFT FANS
In old days when coal firing was used to be carried out on grates or stockers, the entire combustion
air used to be supplied by one set of fans called forced draft fans & there was no distinction as
primary air or secondary air. But with the advancement in boiler technology pulverized fuel firing
was introduced & the distinction of primary air & secondary air came into existence.
Primary air :- This air lifts the pulverized coal from the coal mills & enters the boiler with it. The
primary air quantity is less with pressure higher so that it can lift the coal. This air is also used to dry
the coal.
Secondary air :- As air supplied wit coal ( Primary air ) is less in quantity it is not sufficient for
complete combustion & some quantity of air must be supplied additionally to complete combustion.
This is called secondary air.
The function of forced draft fans (2 in nos) is to supply the combustion air initially, when no
coal firing is taking place. But once the coal firing starts ,the function of forced draft fan
remains only to supply air required for completing combustion process.
Axial impulse & axial reaction type both air in use. NTPS Unit-3 FD fans is axial impulse &
Unit-4 & Unit-5 fans are axial reaction.
Each unit is provided with 2 FD fans. FD fans & ID fans work in unison & maintain a
balanced draft in the furnace. FD fans discharge goes to air heaters gets heated there &
then goes to wind boxes situated at the left & right of the furnace. From the wind boxes the
air enters into the furnace through a set of 13 dampers set. One such dampers set is
present in each corner of the furnace.
6. SCANNER FANS
Scanner fans air supply the cooling air necessary for the cooling of
costly scanner heads. Scanner heads may get damaged if not
cooled, leading to outage of units.
These fans take their suction from the discharge of FD in the
discharge of these fans goes to scanner after getting filtered. In case
of AC failure when FD fans trip, there is provision to provide suction
to these fans from atmosphere.
