YOUR TURN TO GIVE IT A TRY!
WRITING ASSESSMENTS
• Length: critically important; too long = lose students, too short = don’t know if
students are guessing or if it is a true assessment
• Instructions: clear and concise, complete, new instructions for each set of questions,
simple
• Put assessment on early and often
• Mix ‘em up: not all multiple choice or T/F; Variety is the spice of life
• Check for accuracy: take your test, not inconsistently numbered, read out loud
• Use easy and challenging questions: scaffold the learning some; give some “give
me’s,” but also challenge
• Don’t use your neighbor’s test: write your own assessment or modify the ones
borrowed
• Use humor: (use appropriately)
