Risk Factors for Embolic Events in Atrial Fibrillation

High Risk Factors Moderate Risk Factors

Prior TIA Age 65-75 years


Systemic embolus or stroke Diabetes mellitus
History of hypertension Coronary artery disease
Poor left ventricular function
Age > 75 years
Rheumatic mitral valve disease
Prosthetic heart valve

High risk patients : warfarin anticoagulation (INR 2.5; range 2.0 to 3.0)
Moderate risk patients : either oral anticoagulation or aspirin
Low risk patients : daily aspirin (80 to 325 mg)
