The Problem

Background of the Study

Stress is any situation or event that evokes negative
thoughts and feeling of a person. It is most fundamental
problem spanning through people. Many specific events
situation have been implicated as stressors for Grade 9
students. More research is needed to investigate the nature of
this stressors for Grade 9 students. A publication on stress by
the University of New York [Retrieve March 14, 2016]
buttresses the notion that, extreme levels of stress can hinder
studies effectiveness and lead to poor academic performance
and attrition. It goes on to affirm that, students who
experienced stressful life events also reported worse health
outcomes and reduced quality of life.
Statement of the Problem
This study determine the stress level of the Grade
9 students. Specifically, this seeks to answer the
following research question.
1. What is the profile of respondents with respect to.
a. age;
b. gender ;
c. number of siblings in the family;
d. monthly family income;
e. GPA (Grade Point Average);
2. What is the stress level of the Grade 9 students in
the following areas namely;
a. Emotional Stress
b. Physical Stress
c. Mental Stress
3. Are there significant relationship between the
stress of the Grade 9 students and2 their profile
variables?
4. Are there significant differences between the
stress level of Grade 9 students and their profile
variables?
Research Hypothesis
The following hypothesis was tested in their null
form 0.05 alpha level of significance.

1. There are no significant relationship between the

stress level of the Grade 9 students and their profile
variables.
2. There are no significant differences on the
relationship between the stress level of the Grade 9
students and their profile variables.

Definition of Terms
To better understand the content of this research work the following
terms are defined operationally.
Stress. Is defined as “a state of psychological and physiological
imbalance resulting from the disparity between situational demand and
the individuals ability and motivation to meet those needs. “Dr. Hans
Selye, one of the leading authorities on the concept of stress, described
stress as “the rate of all wear and tear caused by life”.
Physical Stress. Referring to something tangible, physical is the stress
experienced by a human where physical things take place.
Emotional Stress. A negative emotional reaction which may include
fear, anger, anxiety, and suffering endured/experienced by the victim of a
tort, for w/c monetary damages ,ay be awarded.
Mental Stress. Mental stress in the pressure brought to bear on the
existimg mental balance or emotional equilibrium of any person.
Grade 9 students. This refers to the respondents of our study.

 Shajmohan (2016), major source of stress found out through
study have direct relation with the stress students an approach
may be the use of stress management workshop.
 Harlina H. Siraj (2013) students can be stressed due so many
stress or such as academic reasons, financial problems, health
problems or lose close family member.
 Flora Richards Gustafson (2017) stated that body natural
response to challenges, students experience high level of stress or
chronic stress regardless of her age or grade, it can interfere with
the ability to learn and memorize.
 Dr. P. Suresh (2015) stated that stress can exist when working at
fast place, doing difficult problems, or listening to someone
shout at you it can exist because of numerous social demands on
time.
Local Literature
 Most of the studies reported that first year to grade 9
students experiences stress than senior students
because of exposure to new and unfamiliar
environments(Kaur et al; 2009; Khater et al; 2014;
Nancy; 2011; Prasad et; 2013; Sayedfatemi et al;

stated academic stressor was workload whereas the
commonly reported stressors were lack of knowledge,
inadequate training
Foreign Studies
 Ivna V. Freire (2017) stated that the excessive and
continuous stress has effect that go beyond more
health commitment, by triggering various diseases,
and it is well established that this stress related
somatic events con effect the quality of life.
 Dr. R sathya devi et al (2015) stated that the necessary
components of stress management programs specific
to the needs of high school students stress can affect
the academic performance of students.
Local Studies
 The majority of studies reported that students used
more positive coping strategies than negative
strategies. The most common positive coping
strategies were problem solving, transference,
optimism, seeking family and friends support, and
leisure activities (Chan et al; 2009; Khater et al; 2014;
Sayedfatemi et al; 2007; Sikander & Aziz; 2012) The
most commonly reported negative coping strategies
were crying and isolation ( Kaur et al; 2009; Nancy;

Methodology
This chapter presents the
research, subject of the study,
sampling procedure and
techniques, data gathering
procedure, data gathering
instrument and the statistical
treatment to use.
Research Design
This study will focus on the
quantitative research design.
According to Alliaga and Gunderson,
quantitative research is an inquiry
into a social problem, phenomena by
gathering numerical data are analysed
using mathematically based methods.
According to Cresswell,
quantitative research is selected ( i.e
cause and effect thinking, use of
measurement and observation, and test
of theories) employs strategies of
inquiry such as experiments and
survey, and collects data on
predetermined instrument that yield
statistical data.
According to Alliaga, non-
experimental design is used
when the treatment is not
possible as the independent
variables naturally exist, and
respondents will be randomly
distributed into every group.
According to DevinKowalczyk,
non-experimental is the label given
to a study when a research cannot
control, manipulate or alter the
predictor variable or subject, but
instead, relies on interpretation,
observation or interaction to come
to a conclusion.
Sampling Technique and
Procedure
This study will use the Purposive or
Judgemental Sampling because we will be
going to choose people whom we are sure
could correspond to the objectives of our
study, like selecting those w/ rich
experiment or interest in our study. The
study will utilized the 100% participation of
the Grade 9 Students of Antonio P. Villar
National High School in order to get a
better result.
Data Gathering Procedure
After collecting all data from the Grade
9 Students of Antonio P. Villar National
High School through a research tool, a
statistical treatment was applied as a basis
of our conclusion and recommendation as
the mean scores was calculated. The items,
which the highest value on percentage scale,
were interpreted as finding in the light of
objectives of study. The generalized of
finding are rise to conclusions. In the light
of conclusion recommendations were made.
Data Gathering Instruments
The researchers will use a
questionnaire – checklist as the main
data-gathering instrument. This
includes a questionnaire to gather
personal and family background of the
students, personality type of the
students and a tool to measure the
stress level of the students. Below are
the contents of the questioners to be
administered to respondents.
Statistical Treatment
The following statistical treatment
was used to answer the research
questions of thus study;
1. For the profile of the respondents,
frequency counts and percentage
counts and percentage was used.
2. To answer the problem 2, about the
stress level among the Grade 9
Students of APVNHS ,
we determined the weighted mean for
each indicator the overall weighted
mean. Of the three categories namely:
Physical, Emotional, and also Mental
Stress.
3. To determined the significant
relationship between the stress level
among the Grade 9 students pearson r:
coefficient of correlation was used.
4.To determined the significant
differences between the stress level
among the Grade 9 students and
their profile variables, the ANOVA
or Analysis of Variance was used..
