Sampling Distribution

of Sample Means
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, all the students are expected to:
1. illustrate random sampling;
2. distinguish between parameters and statistics; and
3. construct sampling distribution of sample means.
ACTIVITY
CONSTRUCTING FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION

government office. Construct a frequency distribution for the
different blood types.

COMPUTING FOR THE MEAN OF A SAMPLE
Find the mean of the following sets of numbers.

10,4,8,3,2 27/5 or 5.4
6,10,9,12,4,5 23/3 or 7.67
12,2,5,7,11,8,4 7

Time

2.8∁4 = 70
3. 9∁6 = 84
4.10∁3 = 120
5.12∁8 = 495
Random Sampling
- a method of selecting a sample (random
sample) from a statistical population in such a
way that every possible sample that could be
selected has a predetermined probability of
being selected
Sample
- is the subgroup of a target population.
Population
- is the set of all people, objects, events, or numbers wish to
investigate.

*Statistics – is the descriptive measures computed

from a sample.
*Parameter – is the descriptive measures
computed from a population.
•Example:
If you want to know the average height of the
residents of the Philippines. The thing is, this is quite
large number, and wouldn’t able to get data for
everyone. So you draw a sample, that is, you get the
height of some people of Philippines.
Combination

- is the number of samples of size n that can be

drawn from a population size N, is given:
N∁n
where, N = size of the population
n = size of the sample
Frequency Distribution

- is an arrangement of the statistical data that

exhibits the frequency of the occurrence of the
values of a variables.
Mean
- is the value obtained by adding the values in the
distribution and dividing the sum by the total number of
values.
σ𝑥
X=
n
Sample Mean
- is a random variable, which depends on a particular
sample.
Sampling Error

- is the difference between the sample mean

and population mean.
Probability – is the chance that something will happen.

number of events
Probability (P(x)) =
number of possible outcomes
Sampling Distribution of the Sample Means

- is the frequency distribution using means

computed from all possible random sample of a
specific size taken from a population.
- also called Probability Distribution.
• Steps in Constructing the Sampling Distribution of the Sample Means
1. Determine the number of possible samples that can be drawn
from the population using the formula:
N∁n
where, N = size of the population
n = size of the sample

2. List all the possible samples and compute the mean of each
sample.
3. Construct frequency distribution of the sample means obtained
in step 2.
Example:
A population consists of the numbers 2,4,9,10, and 5. List
all the possible samples of size 3 from this population and
compute the mean of each sample.

a. How many samples can be drawn?

N= 5
n= 2 N∁n = 5∁𝟐
= 5!
(5-2)!2!
= 10
b. List all the possible samples and mean.
Sample Mean
2,4,9 5.00
2,4,10 5.33
2,4,5 3.67
2,9,10 7.00
2,9,5 5.33
2,10,5 5.67
4,9,10 7.67
4,9,5 6.00
4,10,5 6.33
9,10,5 8.00
c. Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means
Sample Mean (X) Frequency Probability
3.67 1 1/10
5.00 1 1/10
5.33 2 1/5
5.67 1 1/10
6.00 1 1/10
6.33 1 1/10
7.00 1 1/10
7.67 1 1/10
8.00 1 1/10

A population consists of the six numbers: 12,2,3,6,8, and
11. Consider samples of size 2 that can be drawn from this
population.

a. How many samples can be drawn?

b. List all the possible samples and corresponding mean.
c. Construct sampling distribution of the sample means.
d. Draw a histogram of the sampling distribution of the
means
a. N∁n = 6∁2 = 6!
(6-2)!2!
= 15
