Managing Well Data

Importing ASCII Well Data
From within ProjectExplorer, click on File >> Import >> Well
>> IHS 297 Well Import (Fixed Field) in the ProjectExplorer
menu bar.


The IHS 297 Well Import (Fixed Field) dialog box appears
on the desktop.


Click Open to return to the IHS 297 Well Import (Fixed
Field) dialog box. The file WillistionTR.97f is now listed as
the Import file.


In the Options for First Import into Empty Database group box,
ensure that the check box next to Perform bulk load import and
the check box next to Create WellBase map layer are both
selected.


Click Next to open the next dialog box in the import wizard.


Accept the default values on the Boundary entity action dialog and
click Next to progress to the final step in the import wizard.


The Import Data Coordinate System dialog box appears. The
default settings are the Database Coordinate System settings,
which were defined when the project was built. Accept these
default settings (the well data are in a Geographic
Latitude/Longitude coordinate system).


Click Finish to begin the import process. A series of progress
bars (Importing, Loading, Updating, and Layer Create) will
appear to monitor the import.


Once the import is complete, launch WellBase from the GeoGraphix
tool bar on the right side of ProjectExplorer.
WellBase Information Manager shows the information from the first
well in the database in scout ticket format.


Scroll through the data for several wells using the
arrows to become familiar with WellBase Information Manager.
Click the Formations tab to observe recorded formation tops
for the wells.


To display the well data in List format, select View >> Well List
from the menu bar.


Place the cursor on the gray line just above the Tabs and drag
the Tables portion of the window down near the bottom of the
screen.


Scroll through the list of wells. Highlight or select any well by
clicking on the gray box (row marker) to the left of a Well ID.
Notice that the information shown on the Tabbed Pages portion
of the screen will be pertinent to the well selected in the well list

Managing Production Data

Production Data
WellBase supports monthly production data and production test
data. This data supports robust production statistics and analysis.
Production data statistics and graphic can then be used to create
descriptive display layers for viewing in GeoAtlas.
Importing Production Data

As above Well data Import but change the Format to Production
data option

Production Data
• File >> Import >> IHS 298 Production Import
(Fixed Field).
• C:\Class Data\ GESXplorer\ willistonprod.98f

Production Analysis
• Open Well 25083050140000 (T S Benson #1)
• click on the production graphs button on production tab

Production Analysis
• Production Analysis module displays Rate vs. Time, Rate vs.
Cum, and P/Z vs. Gas Cum charts complete with EUR and
Remaining Reserve calculations
• To save the calculated EUR and RR values to WellBase, click the
Save Results button (accept the Default Save to Source
selection).

Creating Production Graph Layers

• Select Layer >> Create Layer >> Production Graph… from the
menu.
• Select the RDRV as the Producing Zone.
• Name the layer RDRV Production Graphs.
• Select the Callout lines for all graphs radio button

Zoom in on any part of the map to view the wells and the posting
for Total Depth.


Right-click on the map with the Zoom tool to turn it off. Move
the mouse cursor so the tip of the arrow is in the center of a
well symbol. Observe the yellow box with well information text
displayed.


This feature is called Map Tips and the options for this feature can
found in Map Tips Options. Select Tools >> Map Tips >>
Define/Edit on the GeoAtlas menu bar or select the Map Tips
Options button on the View toolbar to access Map Tips Options.


The Define Map Tips dialog box will appear on the desktop.


Highlight the Straight hole well entity and observe the Fields in the
grid.


These defined Fields can be modified or new fields can be added
to appear as Map Tips on the layer. Essentially, any WellBase data
could be displayed, as a Map Tip, but the Field must be added to
the Map Tip Bin during the layer create process. This will be
demonstrated in a later workflow task. Click Cancel to exit the
Define Map Tips dialog box.


To demonstrate the thematic mapping feature associated with
the well symbol colors, select the Define Thematic Symbols
button on the Active Layer toolbar to access thematic
mapping options.


Click the Field Spectrum tab to observe that the Operator field is
being color-coded (thus the explanation for colors by operator in the
layer).


Select Cool Tones in the Scheme drop-down list box. The colors for
each of the top 10 operators in the project change color in the grid.


Click OK to display the wells with a different color-code scheme.
Click OK to the Copy Rendering Definition message.

In GeoAtlas, click Layers >> Create Layer >> WellBase (or
alternately click Wells >> Create WellBase Layer).
The Choose WellBase Template dialog box appears on the desktop.

Click OK to open the WellBase Layer Create – New

Layer/Template dialog box



Expand the Formations directory tree under Database Tables.


Scroll down to the Top Subsea field. While holding down the left
mouse button, drag the Top Subsea field into the window on the
right and place it at the bottom of the well symbol.


The formation and source codes must be defined for the top subsea
data posting. Click the down arrow in the Select formation list box and
select RDRV (Red River) from the drop-down list.
Select all source codes by clicking the button to add the codes
to the Selected list box on the right.


Click OK to return to the WellBase Layer Create-New Layer/Template
dialog box.


After the selection is made, the Top Subsea field in the list box to
the left shows a check mark next to it. Formations. Top Subsea now
appears in a text box underneath the well symbol.


Expand the Well Header table in the Database Table tree, and scroll
down to Name and # (Well Number). Select Name and drag and
drop it above the well symbol. Select # and drag and drop just to
the right of Name.


Click and hold the left mouse button and draw a box around both
the WellHeader.Name and WellHeader.# text boxes. The text boxes
will be highlighted with diagonal lines.
Right-click inside one of the highlighted text boxes, and select

Add/Join Text to open the Joined Text Preferences dialog box.


The Jointed Text Preferences dialog box will appear on the
desktop.


Highlight Well Header. # in the list box on the left. In the Prefix text:
box on the right type a space, the number sign, #, and a space.
These actions will join the Name and # together as a single data
posting entity with the number symbol and space before the #.

In the WellBase Layer Create - New Layer/Template dialog box,
there is now a single text box above the well symbol. Place the
mouse cursor over the box and the Tool Tip indicates the posting
now contains the Wel Name and the #. Drag the posting to a
desired position above the well symbol.


From the Well Header table in the Database Tables list box, drag the
Comp Date, Datum Elev, Reference, and TD fields to the Map Tip Bin
(the fields in the Map Tip Bin will be displayed as Map Tips on the
map) :


From the Production Statistics table, drag the Cumulative Gas
Volume, to the Map Tip Bin.
On the Date and Production Zone dialog box, click the check
box for All producing zones.


Click Finish. Then in a similar fashion, drag the Cumulative Oil
Volume, and the Cumulative Water Volume fields to the Map Tip
Bin selecting the All producing Zones check box for each.
To edit the font attributes of both postings, select both postings by
holding the left mouse button down and dragging a box around
both postings.


Right-mouse click and select Font from the drop-down menu.
The Font Attributes dialog box will appear on the desktop.


Change the Height to 225, and the Style to Bold.
Click OK to return to the WellBase Layer Create dialog box.


In the Name: list box at the bottom of the dialog box, type Wells,
Red River Subsea and click the checkbox for Template (this layer’s
posting attributes will be used to create another layer).
Click OK to begin creating the layer. An advancing bar will appear

in the lower right corner indicating the progress of the layer
creation. The dialog box will disappear when the layer is created.



Observe that the new layer (Wells, Red River Subsea) appears as the
Active Layer and on the map in GeoAtlas.


Two WellBase layers appear to be displayed on the map. Right-click
on the map and choose Select Layers from the drop-down shortcut
menu.


The Layer Selection dialog box appears on the desktop.


Remove the Wells color-coded by operator layer by highlighting it
in the right pane and clicking the remove button.
Click OK to re-display the map with just one WellBase layer.

Creating a WellBase Layer Using Template

In GeoAtlas, click Wells >> Create WellBase Layer….


Select the Wells, Red River Subsea template.
Click OK to open the WellBase Layer Create – New

Layer/Template dialog box.


The Additional Information Needed dialog box appears.


The formation and source codes must be defined for the top subsea
data posting.


Select all source codes by clicking the button to add the codes to
the Selected list box on the right.


Click OK to return to the WellBase Layer Create-New Layer/Template
dialog box.


Click and drag the mouse cursor around the two top subsea postings to
select them then right-click and choose Calculate Gross Thickness from
the shortcut menu.


The Resolve Downhole Post message box will appear on the desktop.


Select RDRV (should already be selected) and click OK.
The two postings will now appear as one calculated isopach posting.


In the Name: list box at the bottom of the dialog box, type Wells,
Red River Isopach.


Click OK to begin creating the layer. An advancing bar will appear in
the lower right corner indicating the progress of the layer creation. The
dialog box will disappear when the layer is created. Again, two
WellBase layers will appear on the map (observe 2 postings below well
symbol) in GeoAtlas.


Remove the Wells, Red River Subsea layer using Layers >> Select.
The Wells, Red River Isopach layer should appear on the map.
