Boyle’s Law

This lesson introduces Boyle’s Law, which

describes the relationship between pressure and
volume of gases.

P P1V1 = P2V2
V
Boyle’s Law
 This law is named for Robert Boyle, who
studied the relationship between
pressure, p, and volume, V, in the mid-
1600s.
 Boyle determined that for the same
amount of a gas at constant
temperature, results in an inverse
relationship:

volume
pressure
when one goes up, the other
comes down.
Boyle’s Law Mathematical
Expression:
V α 1 at constant T and n
P
Where:
V = volume
P = pressure
T = temperature
n = amount of the gas.

Boyles’ Law and Breathing

During an inhalation,

• the lungs expand.

• the pressure in the

lungs decreases.

• air flows towards

the lower pressure
in the lungs.
