WHEN DO I CITE A SOURCE?

When doing research, you need to list or ´citeµ the


resources you looked at for your information.

This includes print and non-print resources (books,


encyclopedias, magazine articles, websites)

Author (s)

Title (Be careful not to select the ´seriesµ title)

Place of Publication (name of a city, underneath


publisher usually)

Publisher (found at the bottom usually)

Copyright Date (year, usually next page)


CITING A BOOK CONTINUED«

With the place of publication (city) ² when more


than one city is listed, you select the city that is
in our country:
New York, London, Paris, Sydney

If the city is not a well-known one, you should also


include the 2-letter state abbreviation:

Name of Encyclopedia

Copyright date or edition (year; can check cover, if


not go to title page)

Magazine date (or issue): remember magazines come


out, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly or
quarterly

Page or page numbers


CITING A WEBSITE

Look for an author / creator of site

Give the title of web page

Give the title of website

If possible, look for the date the website was created

Look for the address of the website (www«)

Give the date you looked at the website and you list the
day, then the month, then the year

A works cited page goes at the end of your report
and or presentation.

You will list all your resources in alphabetical


order, first by author·s last name, then by title
if no author is given.

Double space between each resource, if you have to


type onto a second line indent 5 spaces. Use the
correct punctuation.
