Roles & Responsibility
Vendors/Subcontractors Management are responsible to provide:

• Safe method of work and safe equipment:


This will require a full task briefing including method and selection of tools, to
be delivered by the person who is putting the operative to work. The briefing
will be signed by the operative carrying out the activity and a copy of the
briefing passed to the safety department.

• Safe place of work, safe access & egress to that place:


This will include suitable segregation of the works from existing hazards such
as moving plant and machinery, activities being carried out by others and the
planning of access and egress.

• Enforcement of systems, standards and controls:


The duty to enforce disciplinary procedures for deviation from the prescribed
methodology, the maintaining of safety standards and the continual
evaluation of control measures in place.

Roles & Responsibility
All Employees are responsible to:

• Ensure mandatory PPE, hard hat, high visibility vest, safety glasses. Life
jacket and boots are worn and maintained at all times.
• Check their own tools and any equipment issued for damage.
• Co-operate and comply with rules, methods of work as described in the
task briefing and any permit restrictions in place.
• To inform management of any unsafe practices.
• Not to interfere with, or misuse anything provided in the interest of
health and safety.
• Take care of themselves and others.
• Contribute towards improving the safety culture on the project.

Safe Use of Lifejackets/Buoyancy Aids

• Lifejackets/buoyancy aids should be provided to


and worn by workers with risk of falling into water
• Lifejackets should be thoroughly checked by the
user before each use.
• A lifebuoy with sufficient lifeline (not less than 30
meters) should be provided and the locations of the
lifebuoys should be at less than 50-metre intervals
along the edges of places where work is being
carried out over side or in an exposed position
where there is a reasonably foreseeable risk of
falling. To avoid any delays to rescue operations,
lifebuoys should not be tightly tied to posts.

Hand tools
• Inspect the tool everyday
• Don’t use defective and home made tools
• Use correct tool for correct job.
• Cutting tool should always be sharp.
• Replace split and damaged tools. Don’t tape or wire up
• Protect sharp edges of tool.
• Ensure hammer heads are not secured with nails, use the correct
wedges.

Plant, Equipment ,
Portable Electrical Tools

• Check supply cable for cuts, splits or damage


• Do not carry out makeshift repairs; regular
maintenance and repairs should be carried out by
qualified electricians
• All portable electrical equipment must be tested
and tagged
• Protect supply cables from sharp edges and
objects; never carry tools by their cable
• Keep cable clear of ground if possible to avoid
damage by impact, crushing and abrasion by
plant or vehicles

Tools & Equipment
• Untrained operatives must not be allowed to operate plant or
equipment (including disc cutters).
• Ensure guards are in place on All plant especially saws and
cutting gear.
• Contractors must be able to demonstrate they have given due
consideration to exposure to HAVS (Hand Arm Vibration
Syndrome). If you don’t know, seek advice.
• Ensure issued electrical tools have the date of their last PAT
inspection on them. This must be within the last 3 months.
• Cartridge and Pneumatic tool are controlled through stores,
Untrained operatives must not be allowed to use them. Check
for competency
• All static plant, such as generators to have a drip tray present.
• All plant will be fitted with reverse alarms and rotating hazard
lights.
• Mobile phones MUST NEVER be used when working around or
operating plant or machinery.

Noise

Eliminate noise:
– Use different types of tools and materials.
Reduce noise:
– Maintain tools, dampen noise with absorbers or buy
new with improved sound levels.

Work Vehicles
• Only authorized vehicles are allowed to enter the

• Construction vehicles must be fitted with a rotating

• Smoke only in designated areas
• Do not smoke whilst handling chemicals,
refueling vehicles, in confined spaces or in Site
