– Half life: 75 hours – Psychotropic agent belonging to the chemical class of

Therapeutic Effects of
Aripiprazole:
– An antipsychotic drug used to restore the balance of neurotransmitters in the
brain.
– Used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder,
schizophrenia, Tourette’s disorder, and irritability associated with autistic
disorder).
– May be used in combination with other medication to treat depression.
– Can decrease hallucinations and improve concentration.
Side Effects/Adverse Effects of
Aripiprazole:
– Dizziness, lightheadedness (can cause falls), drowsiness, nausea, vomiting,
drooling, blurred vision, weight gain, constipation, headache, trouble sleeping.
– Tardive dyskinesia (rare)
– Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (rare but very serious)
– Serious side effects: fainting, mental/mood changes, trouble swallowing,
restlessness, tremors, muscle spasm, mask-like expressions of the face,
seizures, trouble controlling certain urges, interrupted breathing during
sleeping.
Special Concerns for Rehab
Patients/Clients who are taking
Aripiprazole:
– Monitor & report signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (hyperthermia,
diaphoresis, generalized muscle rigidity, altered mental status, tachycardia,
changes in blood pressure and incontinence).
– Be alert for new seizures or increased seizure activity especially at onset of drug
treatment.
– Assess motor function and be alert for extrapyramidal symptoms. (Tardive
dysknesia, Pseudoparkinsonism, Akathisia and other dystonias & dyskinesias)
– Be alert for suicidal thoughts and ideology.
– Assess levels of drowsiness or lightheadedness, especially in older adults.
