SOIL TYPE AND DEPTH OF

EXCAVATION
Type of soil used in project is MUROM soil
Murom soil characteristics
• The reddish color of these soils is imparted by the iron compounds.
• They are good material for building huts and paths, as they can be
compacted easily to form hard surfaces.
• They are generally impervious.
• Murom soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminum, and is commonly
considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas.
• Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide
content.
• They develop by intensive by intensive and long-lasting weathering of the
underlying parent rock.

FOUNDATION
• A foundation is the element of an architectural structure which connects it
to the ground, and transfers loads from the structure to the ground.
Foundations are generally considered either shallow or deep. Foundation
engineering is the application of soil mechanics and rock mechanics in the
design of foundation elements of structures.
• In our project we have raft foundations and isolated stepped foundation
RAFT FOUNDATION
• The raft foundation is a very commonly used type of raft foundation system
. Raft foundation is also known as Mat foundation.
• Raft foundation is actually a thick concrete slab resting on a large area of
soil reinforced with steel, supporting columns or walls and transfer loads
from the structure to the soil. Usually, mat foundation is spread over the
entire area of the structure it is supporting.

ISOLATED STEPPED FOOTING

• Footings which are provided under each column independently are called
as Isolated footings
• As from the name its resembling that footings are stacked upon one another
as steps. In these type of footing two or more concrete cross-sections are
stacked upon each other. This type of footings are also called as Step
foundation.

• FOOTINGS:
• It is defined as a structure constructed in brickwork, masonry or concrete
under the base of a wall or column for the purpose of distributing the load
over a larger area.
• “FOUNDATION” is that part of a structure which is in direct contact with
soil and transmits load into it.

• TYPES OF FOOTINGS:
 Spread or isolated or pad footing.
 Strap footing.
 Combined footing.
 Strip or continuous footing.
 Mat or raft footing.

COLOUMS:
• Any structural component that transmits a compressive force parallel
through its centre .
• Generally vertical supports of building , it can be vertical or diagonal .

TYPES OF COLOUMNS:
1. BASED ON SHAPE
2. BASED ON A TYPE OF REINFORCEMENT
3. BASED ON TYPE OF LOADING
4. BASED ON SLENDERNESS RATIO

BEAMS
• Beam is the horizontal member of a structure, carrying transverse loads
perpendicular to its length .
• In singly reinforced beam have steel provided only one side tension
reinforcement .

SLABS:
Slabs are constructed to provide flat surfaces, usually horizontal, in
building floors, roofs, bridges, and other types of structures. The slab may
be supported by walls, by reinforced concrete beams usually cast
monolithically with the slab, by structural steel beams, by columns, or by
the ground. Or a large, thick, flat piece of stone or concrete,
Typically square or rectangular in shape. “paving slabs”.
TYPES OF SLABS:
• One Way Slab : (Ly/Lx) > 2
• Two Way Slab : (Ly/Lx) < 2
Where Ly =longer span ,Lx =Shorter span

Procedure for design of slab

1. To find no of bars required for main reinforcement and distribution
2. To find cutting length of main & distribution bars
3. To find top (extra ); top bars provided at the top of critical length (Ly)
area .

DETAILING OF STRUCTURAL
ELEMENTS
LAP LENGTH
• It is one of the important term in the reinforcement. This is usually
confused with another important term called development length and
anchorage length.
• In this article, the lap lengths of bars is discussed. During the placement of
steel in Reinforced concrete structure, if the required length of single bar
may fall short.
• To get the desired design length, lapping of two bars side by side is done.
An alternative to this is to provide mechanical couplers.
Lap Length in Tension:
The lap length including anchorage value of hooks shall be
• For flexural tension – Ld or 30d whichever is greater is considered.
• For direct tension – 2Ld or 30d whichever is greater is considered.
The straight length of lapping of bars shall not be less than 15d or 20cm.

Lap Length in Compression:

• The lap length is equal to the development length calculated in
compression but not less than 24d.

CRANK LENGTH
• Crank is a slight bending in bars at the lap so that maintains the clear
cover even at the lap position.
• The rule that is generally practiced is that the slope of crank 1:10 &
minimum length of crank 300 mm.
BEAM:
• cranked bars are provided at supports to oppose hogging moments.
• cranked length L = (overall beam depth)-(2 X clear cover)-(2 x stirrup dia)-
(2 x bar dia).

SLAB: Crank bars are provided in slab for taking negative moments near
supports.
Length of crank should not be less than;
• Near intermediate supports of continuous slab:-
1. If main bar is used as crank by bent up it in upper face of slab then
0.25L1+(Z-X)+1/2(Width of beam)+0.30L2
2. If extra bar is used as crank then
0.3L1+Width of beam+0.3L2
L1 and L2 are the corresponding centre to centre distance between supports
Where crank bar is to be provided.
• Near end support of continuous slab:-
0.15L+(Z-X)+development length of bar

STIRRUPS
The term stirrups is usually applied to lateral reinforcement in flexural
members and the term ties to lateral reinforcement in vertical compression
members.
Strriups are two types. They are: 1. two legged &
2. four legged
DESIGN FOR TWO LEGGED & FOUR LEGGED ARE;
Stirrups cutting length: (2(A+B)+24d)
No of stirrups =cutting length of bar/(c/c)
Length of total stirrups =no of stirrups*stirrup cutting length/3.28’
Where c/c=centered to centered
A-long side , B-short side

BRICK WORK

Brick masonry is made of brick units bonded together with mortar.

The strength of masonry depends upon
a) Quality of brick
b) Quality of mortar
c) Method of bonding used
TYPES OF BONDS IN BRICKWORK
• English bond
• Flemish bond
a. Double Flemish bond & b. Single Flemish bond
FORMULA FOR BRICKWORK
No of bricks=(volume of brick work/volume of one brick with mortar)
Total no of bricks=no of bricks+ percentage of waste*no of bricks

CONCLUSIONS

• Durability of a building depend mainly on proper construction process and

proper use of materials.
• As per my training, I have conclude that, during my training days I was
familiar with the construction of columns, beams, slabs, and brick masonry
and other works under a TNR construction project.
• In columns beams and slab necessary to know the how steel is required.
• Now we have know that the basic knowledge of quantity estimation of
reinforcement.
• We can conclude that there
