This article is about disturbances in bodies of water that are sometimes
called "seismic sea waves".
Tsunami : Derived from Japanese word

*Tsu - Harbour
*nami - Wave
A tsunami or tidal wave also known as a seismic sea wave, is a
series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a
large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake
. Earthquakes , volcanic eruptions and other underwater
explosions (including detonations, landslides, glacier calvings
, meteorite impacts and other disturbances above or below water
all have the potential to generate a tsunami.
June 15, 1896: waves as high as 100 feet (30
meters), spawned by an earthquake, swept
the east coast of japan. Some 27,000 people
died. July 9, 1958: regarded as the largest
recorded in modern times, the tsunami in
lituya bay, alaska was caused by a landslide
triggered by an 8.3 magnitude earthquake.
 A Tsunami is a series of waves caused by earthquakes or undersea volcanic eruptions
 Ordinary waves-100m. Tsunami waves-500km
 Tsunami travel across deep sea at high velocity about 800-900km/hr
 Rate of loss of energy 1/α wavelength
 So that they travel with high speed in deeper speed
 When tsunami appproaches sea shore velocity decreases, height and energy increases
 Higher near sea shore is ranges from 15m to 65m
 Travel 20-30 miles per hour with waves 10-100 feet high.
 Cause flooding and disrupt transportation, power, communications, and the water supply.
 Happen anywhere along U.S. coasts. Coasts that border the Pacific Ocean or Caribbean have the
greatest risk.
List of Tsunami
•Period of 1800s : 13 Attacks
•Period of 1900-1950 : 14 Attacks
•Period of 1950-2000 : 18 Attacks
•Period of 2001- Now : 18 Attacks
Most Destructive Tsunamis
1. Sumatra, Indonesia (IO)- 26 December 2004 (caused by a 9.1 earthquake)
2. North Pacific Coast, Japan - 11 March 2011
(caused by a 9.0 earthquake on the magnitude scale)
3. Lisbon, Portugal -1 November 1755
(caused by a 8.5 earthquake on the magnitude scale)
4. Krakatau, Indonesia -27 August 1883
(caused by the explosion of the Krakatau volcano)
5. Enshunada Sea, Japan - 20 September 1498
(caused by a 8.3 earthquake on the magnitude scale)
Causes of Tsunami
The main causes to Tsunamis
 75% Earthquakes
 10% Unknown
 8% Landslide
 5% Volcanic
 2% Meteorological
So as you can see, the main cause of
Tsunamis are by Earthquake.
‰The effects of a tsunami are devastating. They are one of the world's
worst natural disasters that can hit a country.
‰Tsunami damage is first caused by the immense force of the tidal
wave hitting the shoreline. Tsunami flooding then continues to cause
damage for several more weeks.
‰The effects of the tsunami on the country during this period range
from destruction and damage, death, injury, millions of dollars in
financial loss, and long lasting psychological problems for the
inhabitants of the region.
‰The initial impact of the tsunami is often publicised across the world
through the news media. However, the actual effects continue for
many years after the natural disaster strikes.
Precautions of Tsunami
 Step 1 : Earthquakes under the water are monitored by sensors on the floor on the
sea.
 Step 2 : The sensors send the information of floating buoys on the surface
whenever it detct any changes in pressure on the sea.
 Step 3 : The information is then relayed to satellites, which passes it on earth
stations.
 Step 4 : All members nation of the warning system are then warend of the danger
approaching.
 Step 5 : Finally, The country make the people alert through the media to take
precautions.
