Giant Tortoise Galapagos
The word turtle can be used to refer to different species that are turtle, tortoise
and terrapin as they are in one family with relatively the same morphology and similar
appearance. The biggest turtle in the world is giant tortoise Galapagos and the name is
taken from its habitat that is Galapagos Islands.
The Galapagos tortoise is not only big in size (more than 400 kg of weights and
1,87 m of lengths), but also has long lifespans in the wild over 150 years and this tortoise
is the longest live animal. There is no predator for this turtle, except human being and in
16 century it was known that the number of population were 250.000.
Giant tortoise moves slowly and mostly at early in the morning or at the evening
at the grassing area. In a day, it has to bask under the sun to heat its temperature. This
tortoise sometimes rests in the wallow of mud or water to protect it body from
parasites. Giant tortoise is an herbivore that eats any grasses, leaves, fruits, vegetables,
and so on. Its eats and drinks as much as possible and because it has slow metabolism, it
can survive without food and water for more than 6 month.
How is that happened?
The tortoise can break down its body fat as a product of supplement to survive in
a long time without food and water. Thus, whenever it meets some food and water. It
eats and drinks as much as possible.
Since the population of the Galapagos tortoise was decreased, the International
Union for Concervation of Nature and other related parties should protect this species
from the extinction.
