Guidelines on referencing
• IGNORE capitalization and punctuation in
names.
Evans-Pritchard comes before Evanston;
Dumont comes before duRivage;
Daniels comes before D’Arcy
• Abbreviated forms are Alphabetized
literally.
MacDonald comes before McDonald
MacMillan Comes before McMillan
• PREFIXES are used when they are
recognized as part of the name (with the
exception of von):
de Chardin, comes before Decker and after
Deaton. Treat names with von similar to
names with Jr.: Smit, G. T. von, Smit, G. T., Jr.

• Suffixes for junior, senior, or numbered

patrimony (II, III, IV) trail the name and
initials: Buckley, W. F., Jr.; Smith, E. T., IV
• Corporate authors are alphabetized by the
first significant word.
The Nature Conservancy comes before
Naughton and after Nance.
• Multiple works by the same author are listed
by date, the most recent being the last.
Works published in the same year list
alphabetically by title, edit the date 19XXa,
19XXb, etc.
• When there is no author, the title is used.
Alphabetized such references by the first
significant word (ignore A, An, The).
