WASTE to WEALTH
Dr. Krishna Kanth Pulicherla

An inevitable consequence of development and
industrial progress is
generation of waste
"Wastes are materials that are not prime products for which
the generator has no further use in terms of his/her own
purposes of production, transformation or consumption, and of
which he/she wants to dispose. Wastes may be generated
during the extraction of raw materials, the processing of raw
materials into intermediate and final products, the
consumption of final products, and other
human activities”

Mera Bharath Mahan
• India is also one of the largest waste generating countries and
per capita waste generation is increasing by 1.3% per annum.

• With 3- 3.5% increasing in urban population per annum, waste

generation is also increasing around 5% annually.

• India produces more than 42.0 million tons of municipal solid

waste annually and per capita generation of waste varies from
200 gm to 600 gm per capita / day with an average generation
rate at 0.4 kg per capita per day in 0.1 million plus towns.

Big agenda for the country
• Understanding the importance and priority of the matter, Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, launched the ambitious 'Swachh
Bharat Abhiyan' (Clean India Mission) on 2nd October 2014.

• The 'Abhiyan' was launched on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's

145th birth anniversary and the mission is mainly aims to mobilize
masses and seeks to create a clean India within a reasonable time

• Should involve Governments, every segment of the society and every

individual.
