BIODIVERSITY INDEX

HOUSE FLY The house fly, “Musca domestica

Linnaeus”, is a well-known
cosmopolitan pest of both farm and
home. The fly populations are notis
species is always found in
association with humans or the
activities of humans. It is the most
common species found on hog and
poultry farms, horse stables and
ranches. Not only our house flies
nuisance, but they can also
transport disease-causing
organisms. Excessive fly populations
are not only an irritant nearby human
habitations, a public health problem
and occur.
HOUSE CRICKETS
House Crickets get their common
name “Aheta domestica” from the
fact that they often enter houses
where they can survive indefinitely.
This cricket species was introduced
from Europe and it is now found
throughout the United States but
primarily east the Rocky Mountains.
Interestingly, they are known for
their loud chirping which is caused
when males rub their front wings
together to attract females.
DRAGON FLY The Blue Dasher, biologically known as
“Pachydiplax Longipennis” is an insect of
the dragonfly species belongs to the
skimmer family. It is commonly found in the
United States and is widely distributed
across its regions. The actual meaning of
the species name “Longipennis” is ‘long
wings’, but in reality, its wings are not
much longer than those found in other
species. The body structure of the female
Blue Dasher is peculiar, as their small
abdomen makes the wings look longer
than the others. This Blue Dasher is known
longer than the others. This Blue Dasher is
known as a Summer Species, and is the
only species present in the genus
GRASSHOPPER Grasshopper, any of a
group of jumping insects
that are found in a variety of
habitats. Grasshoppers
occur in greatest numbers
of tropical forests, semiarid
regions, and grasslands.
They ranged in color from
green to olive or brown and
may have yellow or red
markings.
CARABAO GRASS
Buffalo grass or “ Paspalum
conjungatum”is a spreading
perennial grass with long creeping
stolons rooting at the nodes. This
grass is generally used as fresh
grass in pastures and cut-and-carry
systems, or hay. It is suitable as lawn
grass. Originated from American
tropics and is naturalized in almost
every tropical and subtropical
regions
EARTHWORMS

Earthworm is a common name

for “Lumbricus terrestis”.
Earthworms are source of food
for numerous animals, like birds,
rats and toads, and are
frequently used in residential
composting and as bait in
commercial and recreational
fishing. Their numbers are
strong throughout their range.
MALARIA
Malaria parasites are micro-organisms
that belong to the genus “Plasmodium”,
which can infect many animal species
such as reptiles, birds, and various
mammals. Four species of Plasmodium
have long been recognized to infect
humans in nature. In addition there is
one species that naturally infects
macaques which has recently been
recognized to be a cause of zoonotic
malaria humans.
