• Rizal wrote a letter to Ponce on July 9, 1890, opposing
Garciano’s plan of action.
• Adding, Rizal said:

“We have only once to die, and if we do not die well, we

lose an opportunity which will not again be presented to
us.”

 LETTER TO PONCE, DATED JULY 18, 1890:
I want to go back to the Philippines, and although I know it would
be daring and imprudent, what does that matter? The Filipinos are
all very prudent, and that is why our country is going the way she is.
As it seems to me that we are not making any progress by following
prudence, I am going to look for another pathway! The only thing
that can detain e is a doubt whether my parents agree. I am afraid to
disturb their last years. In case they should object to my
homecoming, I would work for a livelihood in some other part of the
world.

for the oppressed Calaba tentants, including his
family.

NEW ORTHOGRAPHY OF TAGALOG LANGUAGE

 Rizal was the first to advocate the Filipinization of its

orthography.

When he was in Leipzig, Rizal adopted the Filipinized Tagalog
orthography in his tagalog translation of:

• Schiller’s Wilhelm Tell

• Andersen’s Fairy Tales

He used it also in his first novel Noli Me Tangere.

Sobre la Nueva Ortografia de la Lengua Tagala (The new

orthography of the Tagalog Language) – publish in La
Solidaridad on April 15,1890.
Dr. Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera- author of the celebrated
work “Sanskrit in the Tagalog Language” which was publish
in Paris.

RIZAL CRITICIZES MADRID FILIPINOS FOR

GAMBLING

Juan Luna and Valentin Ventura- two compatriots in Paris

urged Rizal to write letters for Filipino in Madrid .

May 28,1890- Rizal wrote to M.H. del Pilar to remind the

Filipinos in Madrid.
The gambling Filipinos in Madrid were angry when they
learned of Rizal’s moralizing. They called Rizal “Papa” (Pope)
instead of “Pepe”.

BAD NEWS FROM HOME

• Calamba agrarian trouble was getting worse.
• Dominican Order filed a suit in court to dispossess the Rizal
family of their lands in Calamba and Rizal and other tenants
persecuted.
• Paciano (brother), Antonio Lopez(husband of Narcisa) and
Silvestre Ubaldo (husband of Olivia) were deported to
Mindoro.
• Manuel T. Hidalgo(husband of Saturnina)was banished for a
second time to Bohol.
