EXCITATION SYSTEM

System that provides DC field current to produce electromagnetic

field for use in a generator.

The magnitude of the excitation current will determine the magnitude of the
voltage at the bus

The simplest method of providing the excitation is by a DC supply via a set

of commutator split rings and brushes

EXCITATION Methods
SELF-EXCITED
Use a part of the generator’s output to PERMANENT MAGNET
supply excitation current to the field. GENERATOR
The field poles retain a certain amount of Consists of field generated by a
magnetism, called residual magnetism permanent magnet rotating within the
• SERIES
• SHUNT (PARALLEL) stator field of a set of armature coils. The
• COMPOUND armature windings are placed on the
stator, while permanent magnets are
mounted on the rotor
SEPARATELY EXCITED
The field is independent of the
armature, since it is supplied with current from AUXILIARY WINDING
another generator. Used for brushless generators
Induced voltage can be controlled with its field winding attached at the end
through change of magnitude of field strength of the rotor.

Series
Field coils are connected across
the armature circuit, forming a parallel
circuit. Only a small part of the
armature current flows through the
field coils, the rest flows through the
load.
Since it is independent of the load, the
generator is excited even with no load
connected across the armature.

SHUNT (PARALLEL)
Field coils are
connected across the
armature circuit, forming a
parallel circuit. Only a small
part of the armature current
flows through the field coils,
the rest flows through the
load.
Since it is independent of the
load, the generator is excited
even with no load connected
across the armature.

COMPOUND
Has both series and a shunt field
forming a series-parallel circuit. Only a part of
the armature current flows through the shunt
field coils, however, the entire load current
flows through the series field. Therefore, as
the load current increases, the strength of the
series field also increases.

SEPARATELY EXCITED
EXCITATION

The electromagnetic
field being used by the
generator is supplied by an
outside DC source, as
contrary with self excited
generators which get the
source of DC current from
the generator itself.

EXCITATION

The excitation field of

PMG (Permanent Magnet
Generator) is provided by
a permanent magnet
instead of a coil

Auxiliary Winding

• Field winding of the auxiliary

exciter is at the stator
• Field winding of the exciter is at
the stator

Rotary AC Excitation System

A brushless excitation system delivers its ac

voltage to the rotor of the main generator,
and receives its excitation from the stator of
that same generator.
The ac voltage of the generator is
transformed to dc by a non-controlled
rectifier, producing the excitation current of
the main generator.
An exciter, in the stator of the main
generator, produces a dc current that
controls the output voltage of the generator.
The dc current of the exciter comes from a
controlled rectifier, either manually or by an
AVR. The exciter can be powered by a PMG,
this way avoiding any external voltage
source
