BIODIVERSITY

AND
EVOLUTION
In this module, you are
expected to:
1. Relate species extinction to the failure of
populations of organisms to adapt to abrupt
changes in the environment,
 Explain the importance of biological
diversity.
 Find out how changes in the environment
can affect species extinction.
 Distinguish environmental changes that
may result in the loss of the species.
2. Make a multimedia
presentation of a
timeline of extinction of
representative
microorganisms, plants,
and animals
Key Questions:
1. What causes species
extinction?
2. How can changes in the
environment affect the
continued survival of the
species?
Park reserve in Calauit, Palawan
Activity 1 Index of Diversity
Objective:
1. Measure species distribution
using mathematical way of
expressing the amount of
biodiversity and species
distribution in a community.
Guide Questions:
1. Compare how your tree I.D. would be
different in a vacant lot than that in a
grass lawn . Explain your answer

2. If humans were concerned about

biological diversity, would it best to have a
low or high I.D. for a particular
environment? Explain your answer.
Population-
Pertains to the number of
organisms of the same
species living in a certain
place.
Biodiversity

refers to the variety of life

in an area.
Communities with many
different species (a high
index of diversity) will be
able to withstand
environmental changes
better than communities
with only a few species (a
low index of diversity).
Activity 2 Measuring
Population Density
Objective:
 Determine the pattern of
population distribution using
mathematical formula
Compare the distribution
patterns of the different
populations.
Bermuda grass

clover

Lilies
Density = number of individuals
Size of area

Population name Number of organism Density

BERMUDA 55

CLOVER 14

LILIES 19

Example : Density of bermuda = 55

360
Guide Questions:
1. Compare the distribution
patterns of the three
populations.
2. Which population has the
greatest
density?_____________________
__
3. Infer from recorded data from the
possible causes for the differences in
the population density.
4. What conditions could change the
density of any of the population?
5. Describe how a population’s density
can be used to learn about the needs
and characteristics of that population.
Populations
• can be of the same size, but they
may have different densities
• Population sizes change when new
members move into the ecosystem.
• Decreases when member move out
of the ecosystem.
• Death rate and birth rate can also
affect a population size.
Limiting Factors
Anything that limits the size of a
population, example is
environmental factors.
It keep a population from
increasing in size and help
balance an ecosystem.
Limiting Factors

1. Availability of food
2. Water
3. Light
4. Temperature
5. Soil nutrients
Carrying capacity
The maximum population
size the an environment can
support.
