ARTIFICIALINTELLIGENCE
“The theory and development of computer
systems able to perform tasks normally
requiring human intelligence, such as visual
perception, speech recognition, decision making
and translation between languages.”

Processing
 3.Natural Language Processing- It is concerned with
the interactions between computers and human(natural)
languages. In particular how to program computers to
fruitfully process large amounts of natural language data.
Challenges are speech recognition,natural language
understanding and natural language generation.
• In 1950 English mathematician Alan Turing wrote a
landmark paper titled “Computing Machinery and
Intelligence” that asked the question: “Can machines
think?”

• Further work came out of a 1956 workshop at

Dartmouth sponsored by John McCarthy. In the
proposal for that workshop, he coined the phrase a
“study of Artificial Intelligence”
We can use them to make calls, send
messages, set reminders, take notes,
recognize music, find great
restaurants, check your calendar, and
more.
How AI advanced in 1950-2010
CHALLENGES
• Computing Power

• Tolerance Power

• Intuitive Thinking

• Judging Power
PROS & CONS
• Precision and Accuracy  Cost incurred in the maintenance andrepair

• Space exploration  Not able to act any different

• Used for mining process  Lack the humantouch

• Can do laborious tasks  Lack a creativemind

• Fraud detection, manage records.  Lack commonsense

• Lacking the emotional side  Unemployment

• Can do repetitive andtime-consuming tasks  Abilities of humans may diminish

• Robotic pets, Robotic radiosurgery.  Robots superseding humans

• Function without stopping, Risk Reducing.  Humans may became dependent on machines.

• Diagnosis and Treatment  Wrong hands causes destruction

Cool things AI is doing now:
1. Vision Systems
i. Face recognition and enhancement.
ii. Automated driving.
iii. Visual tracking systems.
2. Machine Learning
Looking for patterns in vast amounts of data that is just too big for
humans to analyze.
3. Language Systems
i. Automatic translation
ii. You type, it types back

4. Speech Systems
i. Movie ticket reservations by phone. Eg - 1-800-Fandango
ii. You talk, it types. Eg - IBM’s ViaVoice
Robotics
 Data Mining
 A application that allows to the computer to learn from its environment
 Eg. Smart Cars, self-parking cars can parallel park themselves with out hitting
any other objects around it.

Medical
 Diagnostic programs
 Doctors input the symptoms of the patience and the AI helps decide what
medications are best.
 Disease symptoms
 Medical history
 Test results of a patient

15
Video Games
 AI
 What you do in the game will determine how the computer reacts
 Ex. An enemy see’s your character, the computer’s reaction is to attack your
character.

16
Ideal Future of AI
 Want to be as smart as Humans
 Use this AI to help Human in there daily lives
 Recognizing what people are wearing.
 Determining the material properties of something that is viewed.
 Discriminating general objects from the background.
 Recognizing general objects.
 Recognizing emotion.

CONCLUSION
• Finally we can say that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) is
the intelligence of machines and the branch of
Computer Science that aims to create it. AI textbooks
define the field as “ The Study and Design of Intelligent
Agents” where an intelligent agent is a system that
perceives it’s environment and takes actions that
maximize the chances of it’s success.

• John McCarthy ,who coined the term in 1955, defines it

as “The Science and Engineering of making intelligent
Machines”
